Purpose of role

The Information Rights Operation team is a part of UKRI's Information Governance group and supports UKRI in meeting its legal obligations relating to Data Protection legislation, the Freedom of Information Act, and Environmental Information Regulations.

The Senior Information Rights Manager - International will work with the Head of Information Rights Operations to manage, coordinate, and provide expert advice on international funding activities to support UKRI in meeting its legal obligations under data protection legislation. As one of a number of Senior Information Rights Managers they will support the Head of Information Rights Operations in leading the International funding area of operations, including the management of data protection advice and data protection incident investigations. As the international specialist within Information Governance team, they will work closely links with UKRI International teams (initially with Head of Business Development) to build a deeper understanding of UKRI international activities and address the associated information governance challenges.

Reporting to the Head of Information Rights Operations

Role responsibilities
  • Provide advice and assistance on the management of personal data, including data sharing and transfers relevant to UKRI's international activities, including specific countries and jurisdictions, and advise on appropriate approaches to data management, controls and risks.
  • Develop frameworks and protocols with key international partners, addressing the generic data requirements relevant to multiple activities.
  • Manage and suppor the investigation of any data protection incidents that might occur relating to International funding activities.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of information rights training, inductions and awareness raising in support of International funding activities.
  • Provide expert advice on information rights legislation to support compliance and monitor and improve service delivery:
    • Provide expert advice and assistance on data protection including how to work with data protection and related legislation, undertaking privacy impact assessments, and advising on contractual requirements, safeguards, privacy notices, procedures and related guidance
    • Monitor developments in information rights legislation, providing analysis of any implications for UKRI activities and developing proposals to address emerging issues and regulatory change, and disseminating information across the organisation as necessary.
  • Manage complex and or reputational issues.
  • Ensure that effective procedures, guidance, reports and other templates are in place, and are regularly reviewed and updated in line with changing business requirements for International funding activities.
  • Other duties as required, including providing support to other teams across the Group.

Shortlisting Criteria

Essential:
  • Appropriate qualifications in Data Protection, or comparable experience of working in these areas in a complex organisation
  • Demonstrable experience in providing specialist support in information rights to key stakeholders, including senior management
  • Demonstrable experience in providing advice to projects and business change initiatives, to ensure compliance and alignment with information rights policies
  • A proven record of developing collaborative working relationships within a team and with stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrable experience in provision of high quality written and verbal advice suitable for all levels of staff including senior level decision-makers
  • Demonstrable experience of working on multiple workstreams and reprioritising work to meet changing business needs, often delivering to short deadlines.
  • Proficient IT skills to support delivery of work, including an ability to use Microsoft Office packages

Desirable:
  • Experience within a complex, public-sector organisation
  • Experience of international policy, collaboration and research and innovation funding
  • Experience of providing information governance support to business change programmes
