The Lead Front End Developer role sits in the Deputy Prime Minister's Data Unit in MHCLG. The Deputy Prime Minister's Data Unit (DPM DU), is an expert team of data scientists, economists, geospatial specialists, data engineers and data experts that provide critical insights to the department and support decision making. We use advanced analytics to solve problems, test and adoptinnovativeanalytical techniques, including AI, and utilise novel data sources to generate innovative insights.

The DPM Data Unit are fully embedded into key policy areas such as devolution, local growth and housing. We pride ourselves in our ability to innovate, tackle tricky questions and convene different parts of government, ensuring a place-based lens is central to MHCLG�s work.

The person in this role will lead development of DPM DU�s data products (eg interactives; dashboards; semi-automated reporting), maintaining and expanding the functionality of existing capability, and growing the portfolio in-line with user needs.

Job description

As a Lead Front End Developer, you'll:

lead the development and continuous improvement of the DPM DU data-driven product portfolio, using software engineering principlesuse agile project management techniques to iteratively develop a range of data-driven products and content (eg interactives; dashboards; semi-automated reporting)lead the technical design of the data-driven products and contentlead the team in improving the existing portfolio and in the ideation of new products & content improvements and new developments created in-line with best-practice, user needs, user research findings and performance analysiscommunicate complex issues of performance and technical issues clearly and concisely to the team and to senior leaders to aide decision-makingshow flexibility and adaptability under pressurelead on collaboration and building capability while supporting the continuous development of the wider technical teamimplement the use of reproducible processes and promote best practice across the wider Departmentprovide leadership to the wider technical team and they will need to collaborate closely with the data engineering, data scientists, geospatial and policy teams, and the wider MHCLG technical community

As a Lead Front End Developer, you'll have:

experience in coding and developing data-driven products and content in open-source tools and libraries, such as Python, R, D3js or Svelteexperience of using Github, or similar code hosting version control platform, to develop analytical toolsexperience in designing for usability, accessibility and all devicesability to choose and explain how to display data effectivelyexperience of end to end Azure deployments, including testingability to demonstrate inclusive and effective leadership, focussing on upskilling the team and the wider departmentability to communicate technical information succinctly and clearly, especially to non-expertsexcellent oral and written briefing skills including the ability to communicate detailed information succinctly and clearlyfamiliarity of working on agile projects, a focus on continued improvement of self and others, particularly being comfortable with learning from failure, which is expected and valuedunderstanding of data manipulation and working with data to solve a series of complex problemsawareness of mapping visualisation libraries & tools (such as QGIS, Leaflet, Mapbox, Maplibre, openstreetmap, and Tippecanoe)
