Family Practitioner

Devon, United Kingdom Devon County Council Full time

Fixed Term Contract - 6 months

An exciting opportunity has become available within our Disabled Children’s Service in the role of Family Practitioner.

Based in Devon, you will provide practical support to disabled children and young people, and their families, who have complex and multiple needs.

As a family practitioner you will have a crucial role in establishing and maintaining high quality relationships with other professionals, and the families we work with, with the aim of providing assistance, encouragement and support to help the family transform.

About the Role:

The family practitioner role is a fast paced, varied, and challenging role. The support you will offer families will be a combination of planned, targeted work, and providing support during crisis, alongside Social Worker’s,

Family practitioners work alongside the Social Workers to identify the type of support the family would most benefit from, and for how long the support is needed. As a family practitioner, you would then be responsible for progressing this intervention with the family.

As a family practitioner, it is key that you can work as part of a team, but are also self-motivated, and able to work independently to deliver the identified support to the family.

About You:

As a family practitioner, you will be able to work in partnership with other professionals and you will have a track record of building professional, robust relationships with families.

You will need to be a good communicator, be able to adapt your working approach to different families and be adaptable and open to learning how to work with children and young people where their disability requires a different approach.

Family practitioners need to have good communication skills, the ability to work independently as well as part of the team, and basic IT skills to ensure accurate record keeping.

As a service, we aim to offer our children, young people, and their families the support they need, when they need it most, so the ability to manage unplanned change and crisis situations alongside the Social Worker’s is a must.

Devon is a mainly rural county, and our localities cover a large area, with our family practitioners expected to be able to travel to wherever our children, young people and families are. It would be very challenging in some localities to rely solely on walking, cycling or public transport to fulfil this role. Therefore, access to your own suitable transport is required, subject to reasonable adjustments that may need to be made in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Experience in working with families with disabilities and/or complex needs would be beneficial.

To arrange an informal discussion about the Family Practitioner roles Disabled Children’s Services have available, please contact Liz Coates on

Alternatively, to arrange a chat with us or find out more about any other roles in childrens social work, email  .

Please indicate which locality you prefer on your supporting statement.

Internal Applicants, please note: If you are an existing DCC employee, please use your iTrent Employee Self Service (ESS) details to log in and apply.

Applications close on 18/08/2024 and applicants will be contacted to arrange interview dates upon shortlisting.
