Mechanical Specialist

South Croydon, United Kingdom First Recruitment Group Full time
Our client is looking to recruit a Mechanical Specialist in a Permanent position.

Mechanical Specialist

Permanent Role

Based at either Harwell or Risley

Hybrid Working

Our client has a new vacancy for a permanent Mechanical Specialist who would grow into the field of Nuclear Waste Packages (Type B / IP), based at either Harwell (Oxfordshire) or Risley (Warrington) offices, balanced with home working. We are growing capability across our locations and a number of roles are available dependent on experience.

Mechanical Specialist: Role Overview

As a Mechanical Specialist specialising in Engineering (nuclear waste packages) & Licensing you will join our burgeoning team which you will build experience and design techniques and appreciate the whole life-cycle of engineering consultancy projects. Most of this is achieved by day-to-day guidance in live projects, some big and some small. This will include initial concept design through optioneering, detailed design, substantiation of designs, license applications to regulators, manufacturing of the waste packages across the UK, and supporting operational fleets.

The successful applicant may be a good graduate or apprentice who has completed a scheme, and is now looking for a new challenge, or a slightly more experienced specialist that is keen to stay in a engineering generating position.

As well as receiving first-class training and support in design and licensing activities such as the implications of structural, impact, thermal, shielding and criticality assessments, you'll work alongside and learn from some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in their field. Your training will be organised to provide you with the skills and experience to apply for membership of the IMechE and become a professional accredited engineer.

  • You will be an active team member in a supportive work environment, contributing to the achievement of real business objectives and assigned to live projects - some of which are the largest and most exciting projects taking place within the nuclear industry.
  • As part of the team you will gain the experience required to grow in responsibility for delivering and planning engineering tasks of increasing size /as your career progresses. The area of Engineering and Licensing (in particular, Licensing Assessment/Applications and Hand Calculations) is treated as a part of the formal design process and is also vital for achieving regulatory acceptance for our customers.
  • You will interface with other engineering disciplines; project managers, production engineers, inspectors, nuclear safety and engineering analysis specialists.
  • The portfolio of projects has many waste packages in manufacturing phase or recently manufactured, so you get to see your hard work come to life

Position of the Specialist within the organisation:

  • Reporting to Senior Specialists / Container Approvals Manager and line management by Managing Consultant
  • Often managing a small team of designers or design engineers.
  • Interaction with engineers/QA of other areas in the business, both internal and external
  • Supervises support staff in delivery of work packages.

Skills & Qualifications

Technical abilities are essential, so you will need a minimum of a 2:1 Masters or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. HNC or HND qualified applicants will also be considered. We look for those with a passion for engineering and problem solving and would have an interest in designs, materials, manufacturing, how to operate & maintain mechanical components, and the essentials of how radiation shielding works in practice. It would benefit if you covered & enjoyed degree modules such as mechanics of structures and dynamics, preferably including CAD.

Just as important are your behaviours; we are looking out for candidates with great communication skills, who are proactive, focused, and with a willingness to learn.

To support you:

  • Each developing individual is assigned a mentor and a line manager, which ensures that you receive the structured support and guidance necessary for your professional development.
  • Exposure to a variety of projects
  • Opportunities for role rotation depending on preference, ensuring a well-rounded development
