Job summary

The Fish and Fisheries Assessment Group leads and provides scientific advice, research, and assessments for the sustainable management of fisheries. Scientists provide expert contributions and a fisheries leadership role in ICES, and in the advice to the UK Government and overseas governments to inform policy development. The group actively develops the Food from Water Cefas science theme and provides expertise on stock assessments and advice to the Cefas Fisheries International Centre of Excellence.�

The Marine Fisheries Scientist will work within the Fish and Fisheries Assessment Group to lead and support the delivery of fisheries science, stock assessment and management in addition to contributing wider ecological knowledge and skills across Cefas�s international programme of work. The post holder may be required to provide general ecological, scientific, and technical advice and communicate in international fora such as regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs), the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). You will be responsible for the preparation and presentation of key reports and peer-review publications.��

The post provides the opportunity for a motivated individual to join the Fish and Fisheries Assessment group, an internationally respected, diverse and dynamic group conducting and leading on fisheries science, assessments and high-profile management. The successful candidate will be expected to work with national and international scientific and management organisations making a real impact to marine environmental management and policy. Travel, both domestic and overseas is to be expected with the possibility of participating in fieldwork.���

Job description

Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:��

Analysis and assessment of marine data sets, including fisheries data, fish stock assessments, and the impacts of fishing on the marine ecosystem (including multi-species interactions), marine spatial planning, and management (including management strategy evaluation);

Delivering high quality science that meets the needs of a variety of important Cefas customers ensuring that the science and associated advice is presented in an appropriate form;�

Writing reports, presentation of results to a range of national and international science meetings and customers, including dealing with ad hoc requests for science and technical advice and contributing to scientific publications; and

Work on projects for the UK Government and other national and international bodies within multi-disciplinary international teams across Cefas UK and overseas collaborators.�

In addition, Cefas reserves the right to ask staff to take on additional duties and responsibilities which are commensurate with their grade. Team Leaders and management will have a discussion with staff to explain the changes that are to be made. A new job description will be issued if required.�

Person specification

The following are essential criteria required for this role and you must be able to demonstrate your skills and experience in the following areas:�

Excellent statistical and numerical modelling skills;Ability to confidently code using R;Spatial ecology skills with proficiency in GIS;��Confidence in processing, analysing and interpreting large environmental and biological datasets and running complex spatial and temporal models;�Ability to effectively present and communicate scientific data to both specialists and non-specialists; and�Being innovative, attentive, well-motivated, organised, and flexible with good written and verbal communication skills.�
