Job description

The CCUS and Hydrogen Sector Growth team leads an expanding programme to enable the growth of the low carbon hydrogen sector. Growth of the hydrogen economy is essential to deliver our carbon budget commitments and the Government�s Clean Power and Economic Growth the CCUS and Hydrogen Sector Growth team, the Hydrogen Production Strategy team is leading the department�s work to deliver our hydrogen production ambitions, working across the department and with industry to set the policies that ensure low carbon hydrogen production can be delivered at pace, supported by a strong regulatory and policy framework. This is a high-profile role that will involve developing new policy on one of the department�s key priorities � ensuring a secure, decarbonised energy system capable of meeting our net zero commitments. This post if focused on ensuring we consider the system impacts of hydrogen production, including the interactions of hydrogen production with the electricity system and the environmental impacts associated with different technologies. The post holder will need to work independently and collaboratively across government and industry to ensure we appropriately understand and set policies that enable hydrogen production to effectively integrate into the wider energy system. The role will require specialist skills in interpreting and understanding scientific literature, such as do with the environmental impacts of hydrogen production. This role will require the ability to assess complex technical evidence, to conduct research and to make policy recommendations. The post holder will also need to be able to quickly build effective relationships and networks across industry and government, representing the departments interests and delivering effectively through others. Key responsibilities

You will lead on several activities including but not limited to:

� Developing policy on the integration of electrolytic hydrogen production into the wider energy system, ensuring we maximise benefits whilst avoiding any adverse impacts.

� Bringing together a network of stakeholders from across government and industry to help deliver our aims, for example internal analysts to map dependencies and risks associated with system integration of hydrogen production, and working with industry to understand risks and opportunities.

� Interpreting qualitative and quantitative evidence to develop policy recommendations, communicating complex issues in straightforward ways to senior decision makers (Senior Civil Servants, Ministers) through written and oral briefing.

� Leading our work with internal and external working groups, to ensure we understand system integration challenges and that we are proactively working with industry experts to address issues.

� Conducting new research and assessing existing scientific evidence to draw conclusions relevant to policy making.

Skills and experience

� Experience of working in policy development or delivery setting.

� Good drafting skills for written papers and briefings.

� Excellent communication skills and an ability to influence decisions.

� Experience of managing multiple strands of activity working to challenging deadlines.

� An ability to understand how your work fits into the bigger picture, with demonstrable skills in strategic thinking.

� An ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders, across government and businesses.

� Research skills and the ability to work with complex information.

Alongside your salary of �40,950, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero contributes �11,863 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
