Job description

The Science Team provides access to robust and relevant scientific advice and novel research for the development of policy, and the delivery and enforcement of product safety regulations across the OPSS remit, including toys, cosmetics, and new responsibilities in construction products. We work closely with other evidence teams including those in engineering, research, analysis, and testing. It is a multidisciplinary team covering specialisms including analytical chemistry, materials science, bioscience and toxicology. The team is also responsible for chemical risk assessment advice, leads the Office�s access to independent scientific experts in the space of chemicals and materials and works with others to deliver effective research and testing rooted in analytical chemistry.

In January 2024, OPSS published its first ever Science & Analysis review on that shows how OPSS draws from the best evidence in its mission to strengthen consumer confidence, to enable productive trade, and make the UK a world-class market for consumer products.

Working closely alongside the Science, Engineering, Technology, Analysis and Testing Teams in the Evidence Impact Area, the Research Hub ensures that OPSS has access to scientific evidence and advice for the development of policy, and the delivery and enforcement of product safety regulations. The role presents an opportunity to streamline the way we manage our research activity within OPSS, along with building relationships with potential stakeholders, who become delivery partners in our pursuit for further knowledge in regulation and its actors.

Implement new ways of working and collaboration across our team, across the Evidence Impact Area, across OPSS, across the department, UK industry and beyond.� Work with multiple partners across government and beyond to ensure that our evidence outputs are robust, fit-for-purpose and quality assured. Work with colleagues from a wide range of scientific and technical backgrounds. Apply their experience of using scientific evidence to inform policy and/or regulatory activities.

Key Responsibilities:

Support relationships within OPSS, other government departments, industry and academia both in the UK and beyond to ensure that science and evidence outputs are as robust as possible.Commission and manage research projects via the Research Collaboration Network that was published in September 2023: Lead on the Register of Specialists governance as part of Research Hub activities and own the Register of Specialists for Paediatrics and Child Health and development of a Biology Register of Specialists.Input to our science capabilities workstream, which includes engaging with DBT�s Chief Scientific Adviser�s Office, a Science and Engineering incident preparedness and coordination role and a secretariat function for our external Expert Panel in incidents.

Collaboration across OPSS is key for this role. It will mainly involve working with OPSS� wider Evidence Impact Area, policy and enforcement teams to provide leadership to support their requirements. You will use your knowledge and experience to build processes to ensure that the evidence needs are met.

You will also be encouraged to support OPSS� wider aims and goals by representing it at internal and external meetings with key partners including industry bodies / trade associations, standards / accreditation bodies, academia, both in the UK and abroad.

Qualifications:

Requires a degree in a scientific field related to biology or chemistry as essential.

Please note�that this role is open to candidates working in either our�Birmingham, London or Teddington�office. When you are required to give a preference, Twickenham will appear rather than Teddington, so please be aware that you should choose this option if you wish to be based in Teddington.�
