Job Responsibilities

The Science Team plays a crucial role in providing access to reliable scientific insights and innovative research to inform policy development and ensure the enforcement of product safety regulations across various sectors, including toys, cosmetics, and the newly added construction products. Our multidisciplinary team collaborates closely with other evidence teams specializing in engineering, research, analysis, and testing, encompassing fields such as analytical chemistry, materials science, bioscience, and toxicology.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Enhance collaborative practices within our team and across the department, industry, and beyond.
  • Engage with multiple stakeholders to ensure our evidence outputs are rigorous, purpose-driven, and quality-assured.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from diverse scientific and technical disciplines.
  • Utilize your experience in applying scientific evidence to inform policy and regulatory activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster relationships within the Department, other governmental bodies, industry, and academia to ensure the robustness of scientific and evidence outputs.
  • Oversee and manage research initiatives through the Research Collaboration Network.
  • Lead governance efforts for the Register of Specialists, focusing on Paediatrics and Child Health, and develop a Biology Register of Specialists.
  • Contribute to our science capabilities workstream, engaging with the Chief Scientific Adviser’s Office and coordinating incident preparedness and response.

Collaboration is essential in this role, primarily involving interaction with the wider Evidence Impact Area, policy, and enforcement teams to provide leadership and support their requirements. Your knowledge and experience will be instrumental in developing processes that meet evidence needs.

You will also represent the Department at internal and external meetings with key partners, including industry associations, standards bodies, and academic institutions.
