The Role and Department


As a Department, the Student Enrichment Directorate is striving to play a pivotal role in developing, delivering and transforming a Wider Student Experience that is as impactful as anything in the world. The post holder will be responsible for providing reception services and associated administration of the front-desk, including welcome service, professionally greeting users of the building, providing assistance, directions and information.

There are two 14-hour posts available and the post holder will be required to work weekends and evenings. Hours will be allocated as part of a rota but will typically be 8.30-16.30 or 14.20-22.30 during term time and 8.30-16.30 or 10.30-18.30 outside if term. Outside of term the successful candidate will be required to be flexible to cover mid-week evening shifts as and when required. A uniform will be provided.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply

To be considered for this role, here are the skills/experience we're looking for:

Qualifications/Experience

1. General customer service experience in a reception environment.

2. Five GCSE's at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics or equivalent experience.

3. Experience of working in a team delivering customer focussed services or having relevant qualifications for the role.

4. Experience of managing time to meet deadlines.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

5. Good spoken and written communication skills.

6. Good digital skills including experience in using digital devices and apps including a digital booking system.

7. Committed to training/continuing professional development.

8. Ability to solve problems as part of a team and resolve straightforward issues.

9. Ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of colleagues and customers.

10. Experience of dealing with first aid situations.

Typical Role Requirements

Here are the kind of activities that you'll be asked to undertake and ways in which you'll be expected to operate.

Service Delivery

• Provide an excellent and timely service to our students, your colleagues and community partners.

• Carry out some tasks that may require specialist skills including data input and cross referencing of information.

• Follow established procedures when carrying out your role and vary or refer to more senior colleagues when necessary.

• Follow established security protocols when dealing with other staff that are new to an area of work.

Teamwork/Liaison

• Help your colleagues when required with other key activities undertaken within your service for example with scheduling timetables and events.

• Help and cooperate with the rest of your team on operational matters to help achieve shared objectives.

• Liaise with staff in other areas to ensure that services are being delivered in an efficient and collaborative way.

• Help team members review and update risk assessments.

Communication/Personal

• Show a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and the University's values.

• Follow established procedures to respond to queries and bring any complex issues to the attention of more experience team members.

• Respond to queries and provide information about events and activities run by the service.

• Learn the skills needed to deliver services in a sporting environment.
