Technical Services provides in-house consultancy to DIO and the wider MOD, the specialist skills available through the Technical Services team span Construction, Engineering, Physical Security Requirements, Safety Systems, Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, Access and Recreation, Historic Environment and Natural Environment.

Job description

The �Senior Structural Engineer � Explosives Effects� is a key role within the Building and Civil Engineering Infrastructure (B&CEI) Team providing subject matter advice for DIO. The role forms a key element in providing the MOD�s intelligent client interface with industry and will provide specialist professional advice on the procurement, design, installation, maintenance, inspection, and refurbishment of the wide-ranging built infrastructure.

This role will provide specialist civil and structural engineering advice related to buildings and structures that are subject to weapons effects, such as blast, fragmentation, penetration and shock. The role will also provide support to the wider structures team on some of the other unique infrastructure where required.

The B&CEI team sets policy and provides safety assurance functions and technical oversight to ensure the MOD discharges its responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. The work includes the investigation of incidents caused by structural defects or failures, and this may require Safety Alerts to be produced. The job also involves producing DIO technical publications to set standards or provide guidance.

The applicant must be willing to undergo Developed Vetting if required.

Person specification

As the Senior Structural Engineer (Exposive Effects) you will be responsible for:

Maintaining MOD policy and standards documents related to explosive effects and structures.Provide independent assurance and reporting to ensure compliance with policy and legislation.Provide support to DIO Safeguarding with respect to: new and existing buildings and structures on the MOD estate; proposed new third party development.Conduct research and design in support of the development of DIO technical publications.Attend industry and cross government working groups.Provision of �ad hoc� technical support and advice to DIO, MOD and wider industry where required.

Essential Criteria:�

The applicant must have the following:

Specific knowledge relating to the structural engineering of buildings.A broad understanding of the following materials (with a deeper knowledge of at least one):ConcreteMasonrySteelTimber�Experience in the application of Eurocodes.Knowledge of the Construction Design Management (CDM) Regulations.Willingness to undergo training and development.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

Blast Effects on StructuresExplosivesAccident and incident investigations.Reviewing and writing policy or design guidance.Sustainable construction and/or modular buildings.Historic structures.

It is desirable for the post holder to hold the following qualifications:

Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and actively working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) or Structural Engineers (MIStructE).

Qualifications

Suitable degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BSc/BEng/MSc/MEng).

Allowances

Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) �3,000 if eligible and certain conditions met.

Employment Hours

The post advertised is for 37 hours net, however the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees. Flexible working, Part-time working and Job Share working patterns will be considered.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.� This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
