The Research, Capacity and Growth Branch sits within the Science Research and Evidence Directorate (SRE) in DHSC and provides leadership and policy development for initiatives that support research in England via the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

The Research, Capacity and Growth Branch oversees funding for NIHR research infrastructure and faculty, creating a sustainable research workforce which can facilitate, deliver and lead research. NIHR infrastructure funding supports centres of excellence in England to deliver groundbreaking research across many different disease areas including dementia, cancer, mental health, cardiovascular disease and more. The underpinning support function of the NIHR infrastructure creates an environment where health and care research can thrive. We also ensure that health, care and research staff of all backgrounds are offered rewarding, challenging and exciting careers.

Job description

This SEO roles offers an exciting opportunity to make an impact at a national scale. As part of your role, you will lead or support across a range of policy areas related to the NIHR infrastructure. This includes supporting policy development of NIHR infrastructure schemes, which accounts for over �1 billion of NIHR spend each year and promoting the activities of the infrastructure to a range of stakeholder groups including ministers, policy makers, researchers, health and care professionals and the public.�

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who can develop strong relationships and work across organisational boundaries to address strategic policy issues. Confidence in making decisions and excellent communication skills will enable you to deliver at pace to manage the competing priorities of the role. You will be part of a friendly and supportive team that aims to provide individuals with an opportunity to develop and progress. You will be expected to work flexibly, contributing to other branch and wider SRE work where appropriate.

Responsibilities, include, but not limited to:

Leading and supporting policy development for NIHR infrastructure schemes, from experimental medicine research through to applied health research by identifying and addressing current and future gaps in research provision and overcoming challenges to deliver solutions.Supporting policy development which complements ongoing government initiatives led by other government departments and directorates including Best Research for Best Health: The Next Chapter; Commercial clinical trials in the UK: the Lord O�Shaughnessy review; Saving and Improving Lives: The Future of UK Clinical Research Delivery; the Medical Technologies Strategy and the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan.Providing high-quality briefings for ministers and senior officials, including the Chief Scientific Adviser, responding to parliamentary questions, correspondence and other parliamentary business.Building and maintaining strong working partnerships and relationships with policy colleagues, NIHR Coordinating Centres, other government departments and external stakeholders, including our arm�s length bodies.Managing multiple priorities and responding with flexibility to competing demands from ministers, arm�s length bodies, senior colleagues and stakeholders.

Key skills and experience required for the role

Essential:�
