Job summary
The Radiation Hazards and Emergencies Department (RHED) leads UKHSA�s emergency response and preparedness function in case of radiation and nuclear emergencies. It also provides advice and support to external organisations and central Government on issues surrounding emergency response and countermeasures to be taken.
The Radiochemistry Group has a primary role to provide analytical measurements of environmental and biological samples to support the emergency response advice, as well as providing commercial services to a broad range of customers. �The work is performed under an accredited system, ISO 17025.
The postholder will be responsible for undertaking a range of laboratory-based duties such as preparation, radiochemical and instrumental analysis on a range of environmental, biological and quality control samples in support of Radiochemistry Group�s commercial contracts and QA programmes. They will also be able to undertake rapid analysis of samples following a nuclear incident or emergency in support of other UKHSA programmes.
They will be responsible for sample receipt and logging details following the laboratory standard procedures, as well as contributing to housekeeping and laboratory cleanliness.
They will be working largely unsupervised and will be responsible for making accurate records of their work and preparing reports for customers or for QA purposes.
Job description
The main duties of the job will include:
� � �Sample Handling: Handle a range of sample types, tracking them through our internal system, logging in customer samples and liaising with internal and external customers.�
Analyse the samples using a range of radiochemical techniques and instrumentation under an ISO 17025 UKAS accredited standard. Examine and interpret data, checking calculations and data entry, to identify trends and/or unusual results to troubleshoot with senior staff.
� � �Sampling: Occasional off site working away from base to collect environmental samples for further analysis
� � �Laboratory Housekeeping: Maintain working spaces. Organise sample storage and disposal in accordance with laboratory procedures
� � �QA: Undertake daily QC checks and take responsibility for nominated items of laboratory equipment. Assist with internal audits.�
� � �Emergency Response: Be part of emergency exercises to test rapid analytical techniques and become ready and primed to perform analysis following a real or suspected radiation emergency
� � �Other: Complete any other similar duties or tasks reasonably assigned by line management.

These include UK Defence, Government Departments and external organisations. The work is performed under an accredited system, ISO 17025.
Following training under ISO 17025, the postholder will be responsible for undertaking a range of duties including laboratory-based preparation, radiochemical analysis and instrumental analysis on a range of environmental, biological and quality control samples in support of Radiochemistry Group�s work and QA programmes. They will also be able to undertake rapid analysis of samples following a nuclear incident or emergency in support of other UKHSA programmes and will have a role to play in emergency exercises.
They will be responsible for sample receipt and logging details following the laboratory standard procedures, as well as contributing to housekeeping and laboratory cleanliness.
They will be working largely unsupervised and will be responsible for making accurate records of their work and preparing reports for customers or QA purposes.
As the role develops, they will have opportunities to manage small projects in support of Radiochemistry Group�s aims and objectives. Examples of this may include research, improvements to existing techniques or continual improvement in working practices.
The role will also include opportunities for UK based travel to support contractual work or to engage with the wider scientific community, for example, attending scientific conferences.
The postholder may also be asked to undertake more general duties to support the work of Radiochemistry, such as control of laboratory consumables and equipment or other duties as directed by the Team Leader or Group Leader.
