In this role, you will be responsible for the provision of comprehensive and consistent biological risk management to their nominated department and throughout APHA.

You will act as an enabler of work and provide assurance that all legal compliance obligations are being fulfilled, through provision of assurance of all laboratory and specialist work, including ACDP3, SAPO3 and SAPO4 facilities. You will identify and act upon areas of non-compliance or areas for improvement.

Job description

Person specification

The post holder must have microbiology laboratory experience and experience working in a bio-containment environment with sufficient technical knowledge and enough standing and respect for their instruction to be acted upon. The post holder must demonstrate a commitment to the management of safety and have experience of managing within Health and Safety. You must develop a good understanding of the regulatory obligations of APHA � full training will be provided to acquire this critical expertise. Biological risk advisors must be good communicators and have the ability to obtain cooperation and input from colleagues and demonstrate confidence influencing upwards to senior managers.�

You will be expected to either be a Health and Safety practitioner, holding a NEBOSH (National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health) qualification or equivalent or committed to acquiring this training and achieving these qualifications. Educated to degree level preferably in a science subject. You will hold a valid dangerous goods safety advisor certificate or be willing to undertake training and acquire this qualification.

The successful candidate will need to comply with a number of health protocols and wear protective clothing and Respiratory Personal Protective Equipment (RPPE) as required.�

Restrictions on outside/domestic contact with small animals, mainly rodents and rabbits, will apply. The successful candidate should not keep pigs or poultry or live on premises where there are domestic livestock or poultry.

This post will may require travel around the Agency�s locations.

Depending on the areas of work involved you will be expected to have any necessary vaccinations or health surveillance. This will be arranged by the Health Team, Weybridge. It may also be necessary to undergo a pre-employment medical assessment.

Periodic travel within the UK and EU will be required and this could include farm or abattoir visits as part of ongoing research. The successful candidate may have to ensure that no contact is made with farmed animals for a period of 1-2 days or more before visiting livestock farms. This may preclude anyone who lives on a livestock farm. �

Due to access requirements to biosecure areas, individuals must be physically able.

Out of hours work may be required in the event of an incident. �

Travel will be required to attend training courses and undertake laboratory visits. �You must have a valid driving licence or be able to call upon suitable alternate means of transport.

Qualifications

� Degree in a relevant science subject
� Relevant safety qualifications such as NEBOSH General Certificate or willing to work towards this
� Qualified as a dangerous goods safety advisor or willing to work towards this
