Job summary

Military Working Horses have played a vital role within the Armed Forces for centuries, their welfare and�training is fundamental so it is important that they receive the highest level of both at the Defence Animal Training Regiment.

The regiment delivers animal handling training for more than 400 personnel a year, as well as role specific�training for hundreds of animals. The regiment comprises of Canine, Equine and Veterinary squadrons and�provides a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic environment like no other As a Groom you will be�responsible for ensuring that the welfare standards for our horses is met and maintained in line with Defence�policy.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

This post requires the ability to feed, groom, handle, and exercise horses of various breeds, sizes and�temperaments. This requires you to be responsible for your own health and safety and that of the animals you�are providing care for. As such, previous experience working in this environment is desirable.

Grooms should be capable of assisting the veterinary team, which will involve the practice of restraint and�manipulation of all breeds of equine. The role is physical in nature and can be completed as part of a team or�by lone working.�

Person specification

A Groom will be expected to have a basic knowledge of horses and be prepared to work outdoors in all seasons�and weather conditions to ensure the welfare standards are maintained.

Responsibilities will include;�

Riding, exercising and schooling horses including road and canter work, show jumping, cross county training, loose exercising and pack animal handling.Trimming, clipping, mane and tail pulling.Maintenance and cleanliness of stables (including equipment).Conveyance of horsesCare of newly purchased horses.

The role attracts the opportunity for overtime due to the nature of animal welfare.

Qualifications

BHS Stage 2 or equivalent.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
