Join the National Trading Standards Intelligence Team as an Apprentice Counter Fraud Intelligence Researcher . This opportunity allows you to undertake a Level 4 Counter Fraud apprenticeship while gaining hands-on experience in intelligence-led enforcement.

Your role and responsibilities

As an Apprentice Counter Fraud Intelligence Officer, you will play a crucial role supporting National Trading Standard Intelligence Team’s mission. Your responsibilities will include:

Work within established procedures, making decisions on how and when duties are carried out, and responding to unanticipated problems and situations, with guidance from senior officers for serious concerns. Interrogate law enforcement data sets, intelligence sources, and internal databases to identify trends, threats, and emerging issues. Disseminate intelligence to the wider Trading Standards community in England and Wales. Learn and apply investigation techniques, conducting small research and investigation projects alongside intelligence officers and financial analysts. Feeding into the National Trading Standards Teams with their production of tactical and strategic intelligence products. Provide effective support to drive forward the work of the National Trading Standards Intelligence Team. Support the intelligence team to conduct research across multiple data sets to enhance the intelligence picture and assist in fraud investigations within the trading standards landscape. Horizon scanning for fraud issues/crimes that may impact consumers nationally, regionally, and locally and record these on a case management system. Work collaboratively with the team to achieve apprenticeship learning objectives and carry out small projects and tasks to support your learning and investigations. Assist the National Trading Standards Team with their tactical and strategic intelligence products and investigations, supporting the wider trading standards intelligence network.

You will need  

A high standard of learning with an interest in fraud intelligence, investigation and research techniques. Preferably qualified to A level or diploma standards or equivalent vocational/educational qualifications or experience. Commitment to further training to maintain/improve competencies in relevant legislative and operational areas. A willingness to pursue additional training/qualifications. Strong research and analytical skills to identify intelligence gaps, make informed decisions, and provide recommendations based on available intelligence and information. Familiarity with the National Intelligence Model (NIM) or similar models, and the ability to create associated Intelligence Products is desirable. Ability to work effectively within a small team and independently, with strong time management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with team members, share knowledge, and maintain a positive outlook. Basic IT skills with the ability to learn on the job. An understanding of fraud, intelligence and knowledge of handling open and closed sources of information is advantageous.

The National Trading Standards Intelligence Team is hosted by Suffolk County Council. One of the key objectives for National Trading Standards has been to develop intelligence-led working and to support local authority trading standards services in using intelligence to help support local work and priorities. The team provides technical expertise to help identify and analyse national trends and emerging threats, informing tasking and prioritisation processes, help record, develop, and analyse intelligence, monitor trends, and identify key problems and threats, that enables targeted enforcement to be taken nationally, regionally, and locally to effectively deal with criminals.
