Purpose of the role

To work within the Vehicle Dynamics group, and closely collaborate with Race Engineering, to maximise on track performance through optimisation of the vehicle, tyre and driver.

Role dimensions
  • The Tyre Performance team sits within the Vehicle Dynamics group and currently consists of 3 engineers.
  • The role will involve significant collaboration with the rest of the Vehicle Dynamics group, particularly in Simulation and Simulator correlation in which the tyre model is a key player.
  • The role will involve significant collaboration with the Race Engineering teams.
  • The role will also involve interaction with external organisations who may be able to help the team.
  • The role will involve supporting race events in real time from our facility in Bicester.
  • The role may involve some travel, to support both track and rig testing.
Principal accountabilities
  • Contribute to the Tyre Performance team's efforts to:
  • Improve McLaren's understanding of tyre behaviour.
  • Develop tools and techniques to characterise tyre condition and behaviour from car and rig data.
  • Capture this behaviour in accurate models for use in both offline and driver-in-the-loop simulations.
  • Exploit data analysis, tyre models and simulations/simulator to optimise tyre use and tyre performance during a race weekend, from both a car setup and driver input perspective.
Progression

Progression towards the role of Specialist, Tyre Performance Engineer will take place during the normal working practice of the role of Senior Associate, Tyre Performance Engineer.

The main items of progression will include:

  • Demonstrating substantial knowledge in the field of tyre and vehicle performance.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply tyre and vehicle dynamics knowledge to enhance on track performance.
  • Contributing to the goals of the team, by contributing to or leading smaller projects/workstreams that directly impact the goals, in multiple areas.
Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential
  • Outstanding academic background with a BEng in a relevant Engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and understanding of racing car Vehicle Dynamics and the influence of tyre behaviour on racing car performance.
  • Experience in post-processing data using Python/Matlab etc.
  • Experience using a range of modelling and simulation techniques using C/C++/Python/Matlab/Simulink.
  • Ability to work to deadlines on a variety of timescales and balance your workload between different projects.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong analytical skills underpinned by a data driven approach.
Desirable
  • Previous exposure to the track/race team environment.
  • Specific experience in the fields of race tyre construction/performance/data analysis/modelling.
  • Specific experience in suspension geometry design/optimisation.
