Location: London or East Kilbride (East Kilbride office will be moving to central Glasgow in 2025)

We lead the UK's diplomatic, development and consular work around the world. We employ around 17,000 staff in our global network of 281 offices worldwide. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride and in Milton Keynes.

Your role with us

As a member of the Private Sector & Capital Markets Department, you will play an instrumental role in helping us meet UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate – which in turn will establish the UK as leading protagonist in private sector development policy and delivery. To achieve these objectives, we need to drive international and local private capital opportunities that will result in $3 trillion of additional finance, which is where you come in.

As we are looking for four Development Advisors to join our friendly and innovative team, we will place you in a role that is best suited to your interests and our needs. You will therefore either focus on private capital mobilisation, local capital markets or green finance. Regardless of which team you join, you will explore private finance avenues for Emerging Markets and Developing Economies, nurturing a private sector that champions green, inclusive and responsible projects and financial services.

Providing guidance on every aspect of the most investible projects and policies, you will be a trusted advisor to UK Government Ministers and officials, and you will build bonds with Multilateral Development Banks and Development Finance Institutions to identify where capital could be attained. You will also collaborate with other organisations such as institutional investors and private project finance, all with the aim of delivering development impact with accompanying benefits to the UK.

Coming from a financial, business or investment background, or with a knowledge of these areas attained in an international development or climate role, you will have good strategic awareness with the ability to see the bigger picture.

Bringing a flexible mindset to your work, you will be willing to commit up to 10% of your time to other FCDO private sector development objectives, so a willingness to support colleagues in achieving their objectives will take you a long way. As such, you will also have well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with good organisation skills and the capacity to balance the needs of multiple projects.
