About the Role:

The SGO Support Social Worker post will offer you the opportunity:

  • Provide a range of support to carers and young people to maintain the stability of placements.
  • Be part of the duty rota.
  • Support with Annual Reviews of SGO Support Plans.
  • Complete Assessments of Need to determine therapeutic needs.
  • Offer advice on our service to other professionals.
  • Advise other professionals about our offer for SGO support plan and consultation opportunities.
  • To work within the remit of the ASGSF (Adoption Special Guardianship Support Fund).
  • Offer time limited therapeutic intervention to families
  • To provide support and advice to SGO, CAO and residence holders to ensure stability of placements.
  • To support SGO, Adoption, CAO breakdowns to reunification

    "I have been a social worker in the SGO support team since it went live in August 2019. When the team first started it comprised of myself, a team manager and a family support worker. Over the past four years we have expanded to having three full time and one part time social worker and team manager. We are looking to expand further with another part-time social worker. The team is still developing, and it is extremely exciting to be part of the development and growth of the team. We are very privileged to work with families to come up with solutions together and support them through their SGO journey. In this role I have had access to some fantastic training to help SGO carers have the tools to parent in a therapeutic way. I am now trained in NVR level 1, DDP level 1 and have a diploma in therapeutic life story work.



    Some families I have supported since I started in the team, and I have enjoyed every second building trusting relationships with them. I can honestly say that I have found the best role for me. Working with and not doing too families is our ethos and I am extremely grateful to our families for letting us be part of their lives."

    Key Requirements:

    The role of the Social Worker in the Special Guardianship Support Team is a key position that brings together the needs of children, young people and their carers who have chosen a special guardianship order to secure permanency.

    For this post we are looking to recruit a Social Worker for a temporary 12-month position of 22.5 hours. With a remit of supporting SGO and Alternative Support Carers to training and duty work, you're guaranteed different challenges every day. The role demands close collaboration with the connected persons assessment and support and supervision teams and good working relationships across the children's services, working particularly with the Early Help and Strengthening Families. In this role following assessment through an SGO Needs Assessment you may be putting an application through to the Adoption Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF) for the provision of therapeutic intervention. You will also support carers where breakdown in adoption, special guardianship, and Child Arrangement Orders has occurred if a child was Section 20 prior to the orders being made. We are also working with carers who have a child arrangement order to access the ASGSF fund.

    Importantly your work will be child focused, analytical, and based on safeguarding evidence. We are offering this role so that we can meet the needs of increasingly growing SGO Support Team.
