Job introduction

Media Operations is one of two main departments within the Technology & Media Operations Group. Media Operations is at the heart of teams delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences.

Comprising around nine hundred people, it manages the craft and production operations for the BBC's news, radio, and sport services across London, Salford, Birmingham predominantly but also on some of other sites - capturing, editing, and producing our output 24x7 for TV, radio, and online.

Our team are experts in their field with exceptional technical, operational and production creativity at their heart.

Working closely together with our news, sport and content colleagues, we co-create all content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily.

Additionally, the team is responsible for the management of production services, stores, fleet and OB bases in England.

This team will work closely with other operational and craft colleagues across the BBC to ensure that we add maximum value to audiences.

Regional News programmes are the most watched output on BBC 1, therefore quality, creativity, building trust with out audiences is at the heart of everything we do.

  • We will request a showreel from all shortlisted candidates with a maximum duration of 20 minutes showing packages that you have shot and edited. We would request that include packages that demonstrate your ability to work to tight deadlines, and those that show the creativity of your work.
  • We will also request that you attend a Face to face interview at our studio location in Birmingham.
Main responsibilities

BBC Midlands Today is one of the most watched programmes on BBC 1.

We broadcast to some of Britain's biggest and most diverse cities including Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stoke on Trent, Coventry and also report from some of its most beautiful rural towns.

We pride ourselves in making imaginative and engaging television, radio and online packages.

We are looking for a creative and motivated individual with the passion and determination to deliver the very best to our audiences to join our operational team at BBC Midlands Today.

As well as being able to demonstrate your creativity and quality of your camera and editing skills, you will be able to demonstrate excellent team working, problems solving and communication skills.

You will serve radio, On-line and TV, and understand and support the BBC's Digital First strategy. News is a 24/7 environment and there will be weekend, early, late and occasionally overnight shifts.

The ideal candidate will have skills in other operational areas which could include audio mixing, directing, vision mixing, hub operations, satellite operations and more.

As well as being able to demonstrate and deliver the highest quality of camera work, as part of a multiskilled role you will work regularly work in other operational areas of the department.

As you will work closely with the news production team, you will be able to communicate clearly and respect the demands of working in a fast-moving environment.

You will be always put safety first, be resilient and be able to think and respond quickly to broadcast demands, often in pressurised situations.

You will be provided training to develop your operational skills and you will also support the development of other team members, as well as undertake project work when the opportunity arises.

  • Experience of creative story telling with pictures
  • Be able to turn round edits to tight deadlines, whilst abiding the hight standards the BBC expects in its output
as defined under Producer Guidelines

  • Experience of working live and under pressure in any area of broadcast
  • Operational experience in other news operational areas, which may include directing, vision or sound mixing,
hub or satellite operations.

  • A demonstrable understanding of safe working and the importance of risk assessments
  • Understand the changing and competitive environment we work in
  • Understand the BBC values and their importance for the viewer and the ongoing success of our organisation
