Brands and Licensing

BBC Studios is part of the BBC Group and is the main commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation ('BBC'). BBC Studios operates in the UK and over 200 countries around the world.

We create and take the very best content to audiences across the UK and the world. BBC Studios has international offices and production bases in 19 countries across the Americas (including New York), Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia as well as 12 bases in the UK.

We produce over 2,500 hours of content per year, operate in 22 markets globally and generate revenue of over £1.6bn, returning around £200m profit to the BBC each year.

Our Brands & Licensing division is responsible for the promotion of our brands and the exploitation of those brands through the licensing of events and consumer products such as merchandise, books, DVDs, magazines, music (and their digital equivalents), social video, interactive games and virtual reality experiences.

Job Purpose

Working as a key member of a team of Business Affairs and Legal advisors, you will provide legal support to the Brands & Licensing Division of BBC Studios.

You will support the US based business team and work closely with the New York based licensing executive while reporting to the UK Legal Team. The role is with our US subsidiary, BBC Studios Americas, Inc and is based in New York.

There will be a particular focus on licensing consumer products, such as pre-school branded merchandise. Key to the role will be the successful and timely completion of merchandise licences which comply with our policies including our Ethical and Sustainability policies. However, the role is broad covering all aspects of our brands and licensing activties orginating in North America and Latam and other regions as required, including licensing live events and other consumer products as well as advertising and sponsorship agreements, brand and commercial partnerships, production services agreements and editorial and policy compliance work.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Negotiation and contracting: To negotiate, draft and advise on a range of contracts and commercial deals including all branding and licensing activities and the appointment of representatives. Proactively manage and drive forward deals and projects in close collaboration with the business. Revise and develop precedents, training and advice notes to the business to support the Brands and Licensing division's transactions and processes.
  • Advising: To advise on all aspects of commercial, rights and business affairs including rights management and licensing, digital media, legal risks, relevant policy and compliance issues. To ensure necessary rights are acquired or licensed (as applicable) for exploitation. To undertake analysis of existing agreements. Assisting in developing new strategies and policies to protect BBC Studios' business and legal interests.
  • Collaboration: To liaise with (i) the UK and other international offices to co-ordinate branding and licensing activities globally; and (ii) other internal teams as necessary, for example: editorial and regulatory affairs; data privacy and information security; insurance; brand protection, rights clearances; talent accounting; tax and finance. Establishment of "across the board" guidelines to maintain equal obligations for all licensees, taking into account industry standards varied by licensed lines.
  • Risk management: To highlight risks where relevant and seek to mitigate legal, contractual and business risk.
  • Compliance: To ensure that standards and frameworks are adhered to and translated into compliant individual deals. To assess and advise on regulatory requirements, in particular relating to consumer products and licensing. To manage the implementation and management of corporate governance and compliance systems.
  • Market intelligence: To be aware of market trends and stay up to date on changes in the media and consumer products landscapes to ensure best commercial practice. To gain and maintain a good understanding of new emerging business models.
  • Supervision: Supporting and overseeing the work of one licensing executive.
Scope & Impact

Provide legal support to the Brands & Licensing division and the substantial and varied business operations in that area, facing complex and difficult legal issues and analysing and interpreting these issues in a timely fashion to advise the business how best to take account of them in its operations.

Success in the role will be measured by the extent to which matters are completed in a timely manner and risks are proportionately and effectively mitigated while meeting the priorities and objectives of the Brands and Licensing division.

The implications of this role in decision making and effective and timely negotiation are important to the overall profitability of the business.

Compensation

The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $180,000 to $210,000. The actual base salary offered depends on the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and geographic location of the position.This range is not inclusive of a competitive bonus, flexible, hybrid working schedule & benefits including but not limited to: 100% BBCS covered medical & dental insurance, vision, & 401k match.
