Fully-funded PhD Studentships: Mathematics for Real-World Systems CDT

Coventry, Coventry, United Kingdom University of Warwick Full time

The Mathematics of Systems (MathSys) CDT is an EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training. The CDT trains its students in the advanced quantitative skills and applied mathematical modelling techniques that are critical to addressing contemporary challenges arising from biomedicine and health, modern industry, and the digital economy.

The MathSys CDT are offering funded studentships to eligible students wishing to commence PhD studies in the area of Applied Mathematics. We have specific projects available to which you can apply, or alternatively, you may contact potential supervisors directly to discuss projects ideas of your own that fall within the research area of the CDT.

Supported by EPSRC, funded MathSys PhD Studentships provide funding for full course fees and a tax-free stipend for 4 years. Additionally, all funded students receive a generous Research Training Support Grant, including a laptop, £2000 for travel, and £1800 for a secondment in year 3 of the PhD.

In commencing your studies, you will initially be enrolled on an MPhil, and following successful upgrade in your first year, progress onto the PhD.

MathSys CDT students benefit from a cohort experience, including ongoing cohort activities throughout the four-year programme, including:

  • CDT seminars. Providing students with an opportunity to present their ongoing research.
  • Group lunches enabling students to interact in an informal setting and give informal presentations to stimulate discussion across the departments.
  • An Annual Retreat weekend away (UK based) and an annual Summer School.
  • Skills workshops to discuss options, preparation of CVs, and application strategies for future employment.

Eligible students will need to meet the entry requirements and be able to commence studies by July 2024.

Fluids moving through materials like sandstone can dissolve or precipitate solids as they travel, with an ease that depends on the size and connectivity of its pores. In natural porous materials, like sandstone, salts and other minerals can react to clog or dissolve pores. This process of "reactive transport" is controlled by the feedback between fluid flow...
