Project Overview

We are seeking exceptional candidates with a passion for interdisciplinary research in the fields of Physics, Engineering, and Materia Science for a fully funded 3.5-year PhD research project.

This exciting research project aims to develop beam-steering programmable metasurfaces capable of controlling electromagnetic waves in the microwave frequency range. The project focuses on the spatial control of the refractive index using external stimuli, such as temperature, to achieve precise beam-steering capabilities. The metasurfaces will be designed and fabricated using advanced materials, including relaxor ferroelectrics with unique properties suitable for this application.

As a PhD student, you will be involved in a cutting-edge research program at the intersection of Materials Engineering and Electromagnetics. You will explore the principles of metamaterials, electromagnetic wave propagation, and materials science to design and optimize the metasurface structures. The project will involve FEA modelling, materials formulation and synthesis, fabrication of programmable controlling system, and comprehensive materials and devices characterization using wide range of advanced techniques.

The project outcomes will have significant implications in the field of metasurface technology, culminating in the development of innovative electromagnetic devices capable of exerting precise control over the propagation of electromagnetic waves. By harnessing the spatial manipulation of the refractive index the project's findings will pave the way for the creation of metasurfaces that can dynamically and customisely manipulate the behaviour of electromagnetic waves. This level of control over wave propagation will have transformative impacts in various domains, such as wireless communication systems, radar technologies, imaging devices, sensing platforms, and beyond.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive stipend and full tuition fee support for the duration of the 3.5-year PhD program.

We look forward to welcoming a highly motivated and talented student to join our research team.

Essential and Desirable Criteria
