About us

The mission of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children's health research outside North America. GOS ICH's activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health.

About the role

This role offers an opportunity for a senior manager with experience in research management to develop expertise at the interface between research and government policy. The successful candidate will manage the current programme and contribute to the development of the programme of policy research for children, young people and families for the next phase of funding.

We are looking for an individual who has demonstrable interest in the research-policy interface, with demonstrable experience in research contracts and management of budgets. The post involves liaison with multiple sites and with DHSC colleagues, as well as supporting the research team at UCL.

The Unit Manager will be responsible for managing the research programme, contributing to the strategic decision making for the Unit, providing the key point of contact with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and coordinating communications and knowledge exchange with government colleagues.

The postholder will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day tasks essential for running the programme, managing Unit staffing, handling the budget, and coordinating the start up of the new programme and closure of the current programme.

This role is funded until 31 December 2028 in the first instance.

About you

You will be educated to degree level, or equivalent. You will have proven high level decision making and problem-solving skills, and a demonstrable ability to undertake initiatives, prioritise and plan appropriately within a strategic framework. You will possess management experience within a higher education environment, with experience of reporting and budgeting according to funder requirements.
