We are currently seeking experienced senior professional to join as Head of Stewardship. Reporting to the Head of Responsible Investment (RI) this senior leadership role sits within HSBC Asset Management's (AM) Investment Function. The role holder will lead, develop, and manage HSBC AM's Global Stewardship Team. They will work with investment teams to develop effective voting and engagement strategies to maintain appropriate fiduciary oversight of our clients' assets.

The role requires extensive senior level engagement with companies and industry leaders. Active participation in industry initiative will enable HSBC AM to extend the scope and influence of our stewardship activity. HSBC AM has ambitions to be a recognized leader in RI therefore the role holder should have external profile with media and clients.

In this role, you will:

  • Proactively lead, coach and manage a team of voting and engagement specialists; responsible for overseeing all activities within the team and fostering a collaborative culture
  • Drive the development HSBC AM's voting and engagement policies (in collaboration with HSBC AM's Policy Lead) and over time ensure that these support all client assets within HSBC AM, including equity, fixed income, multi-asset and alternatives.
  • Establish the appropriate balance of activity between investment teams and this dedicated engagement team to ensure most effective and efficient implementation of the engagement plan.
  • Advocate and advise investment teams on strategic and effective outcome-based engagements and escalation tactics
  • Lead engagement with key stakeholders to address systemic and idiosyncratic risks: issuers, policymakers, standards setters, industry bodies and NGOs
  • Support on key projects such as the development of systems to enhance reporting and transparency.
  • Identify and manage appropriate partnerships to deliver the stewardship and engagement strategies most effectively
  • Deliver the 2022 Stewardship Plan with clear thematic focus, aligned with enhanced voting guidelines
  • Oversee the Integrated Supervision System (ISS) contract sign off, management of relationship and monitor quality of service

Requirements

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • A proven leader with extensive experience of stakeholder management, cross-border team leadership and team development.
  • Strong knowledge of global stewardship best practice, particularly in Emerging Markets and Asia
  • Broad understanding of ESG issues as they relate to asset management and asset owners
  • Strong engagement or advocacy experience across a variety of markets and topics.
  • Proven ability and track record of interacting and influencing senior investment professionals
  • Strong interpersonal and engagement skills; ability to influence and inspire internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to help define, shape and evolve AM's Responsible Investment strategy.
  • Strong communication skills, including report writing and oral communication.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team, collaborating and coordinating where appropriate.

This is a Hybrid working role with the base location as London. The successful candidate will have to have the ability to commute to this location.
