The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need.

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas:

  • Nursery Workers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Leadership/Management; and
  • Customer Care.

We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council's Job Shop.

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?

Adult Education deliver a study programme at Southfields Old School for young people aged years old with and without an Educations Health and Care Plan. We offer a range of qualifications, and the programme is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of individual young people. We deliver a range of qualifications to our learners within small groups.

We offer a range of pathways to our learners who are not in education, employment or training. Many of the young people who attend need additional support due to learning/behavioural difficulties or mental ill health. The aim of the study programme is to provide support to enable young people to re-engage with education and progress onto further study, an apprenticeship or Employment.

We have 3 Permanent Term Time only positions available

The roles will support our new Programmes for learners with and without Educational Health and Care plans that would like support into Employment in the future.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for 3 permanent enthusiastic teaching assistants to join our Study Programme team. In consultation with the Study Programme Manager and subject tutors, you will support the tutors with the delivery of learning material to individuals or small groups of young people with a range of special educational needs.

You will provide assistance to learners with additional learning needs enabling them to participate as fully as possible in the Study Programme. You will also assist tutors in the preparation of lesson materials. You will be responsible for maintaining learner records and individual learning plans, as directed by the Study Programme Manager. You will support young people who experience severe anxiety in returning to education, meeting them at reception and walking with them to the classroom.

You will support learners with anxiety at break and lunch times, as appropriate, until they gain confidence and settle. You will work as part of a dynamic team to ensure that learners are supported in addressing their educational and pastoral issues, liaising with other colleagues and agencies as appropriate.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Relevant experience of working as a teaching assistant or in a role supporting young people.
  • A GCSE Maths and English qualification at Grade C/4 or equivalent.
