The English Department has an excellent, long-term track record of academic success. Our pupils continue to benefit from the commitment and dedication shown by a team of specialist teachers. In 2017/18, an inspiring 91% of pupils in Year 11 achieved Grade 9-4 in English (Language or Literature). In English Language GCSE the figure was 86%; in English Literature 88%. Recruitment to A-Level is strong with three classes currently studying English Literature in Year 12. We consistently produce a pass rate at A-Level of 100%. In 2017/18, an encouraging 90% of students achieved Grade A*-C; 24% achieved A* and A.

At Key Stage 3 the Department – and school – follow a modular curriculum. In English this involves modules in language, drama, poetry and prose designed to embed, from an early age, the skills required at GCSE. The curriculum is enhanced by dedicated reading lessons and – in Year 7 – an additional lesson targeting spelling. The curriculum is further enriched by a range of extra-curricular activities that include Book Club, competitions in writing and public speaking, a Spelling Bee and theatre visits. Pupils – in conjunction with teaching staff – manage their own library and engage in promotional, fundraising activities.
