Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Newcastle University Full time

We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

The Role
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Faculty Research team to cover the maternity leave for the existing Post Award Research Manager. HaSS is an exciting, multi-disciplinary faculty, structured around ten academic schools covering subjects ranging from the arts (e.g. fine art and music) across the humanities (e.g. history and English) to the social sciences (e.g. law and economics). The Faculty has a total of 700 academic and research staff and 230 support staff across its range of disciplinary areas. It has a significant and diverse student population.

HaSS is open to the world and seeks to address social and global challenges through its thinking, making, and practice. Building on the strong cultural heritage of our disciplines, we value enquiry, exploration, and creativity. We are committed to enabling a supportive culture for our staff and students, which prizes trust and integrity, values diversity, and inclusiveness, and promotes wellbeing in collaborative and inspiring environments.

Working with the Head of Faculty Research, Dean and Associate Dean of Research and Innovation to develop and implement effective and standardised processes in the Faculty for the management of awarded external research grants, aligning with the aims set out in the University Research Strategy. You will have an understanding of the pre-award costing environment and implications for effective delivery of projects at post award, with input to pre-award costing of complex bids where appropriate.

You will provide leadership to schools to oversee and provide co-ordination and direction, including technical and development expertise, in the management of external research projects across the Faculty, including the financial delivery. To ensure the sharing of best practice, signposting and troubleshooting where difficulties arise with post award processes, negotiating across university departments to ensure effective resolution, and to lead on the management of more complex bids in collaboration with schools.

It is essential that you possess excellent organisational and communication skills, have a keen eye for detail and look to identify and implement improvements wherever possible. Working with a variety of stakeholders, the successful applicant will complete a range of administration tasks with a 'can do' attitude and a willingness to be flexible to support the wider team.

Working in a friendly office on our Newcastle city centre campus, this is a fixed-term role until the end of March 2025, working full time for 37 hours per week.

We would be happy to consider applications for a secondment and/or on a reduced hours basis to cover this maternity leave. We offer hybrid working and the role will be based on site for 50% of the week (more if preferred).

To apply, please complete an online application and upload a CV and a cover letter. Your cover letter is a supporting statement, and you should outline how you meet the essential criteria of the role and evidence this with examples.
