ABOUT THE ROLE

We are excited to advertise a 3-year opportunity to join a large and vibrant research environment as a Research Assistant in Applied Mathematics/Statistics at Northumbria University. We have wide-ranging interests in data science and machine learning, and in numerical modelling, theory and observations of key applied mathematics areas to make breakthroughs in our understanding of real-life topics.

We welcome applications that cover the main subjects of the proposal entitled "Mathematical framework for a stochastic approach to magnetic field extrapolations". We will work with the successful candidate to bring their own unique skillset to address these scientific aims: developing fast, reliable and versatile mathematical tools to solve stochastic elliptic and hyperbolic differential equations. You will be supported to explore new methods beyond your current experience and develop your expertise in new techniques in mathematics/statistics research.

This position is funded by the Leverhulme Trust, and you will work with Dr Stephane Regnier and Dr Gert Botha.You will also collaborate with the Mathematics and Statistics group members, who provide a collegiate environment in which to conduct your research. The position is funded for three years. and is available from 1st October 2024 until 30th September 2027.

ABOUT THE TEAM

This Research Project is being delivered within the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electronic Engineering as part of a combined research within the Solar and Space Physics Research Group, the Applied Statistics group, and the Mathematics of Complex and Nonlinear Phenomena group. Evidence of the group's success includes funding from STFC, NERC, Leverhulme Trust, Royal Astronomical Society, the US Air Force, and the UKSA. You will join a growing department with more than 10 independent research fellows, and more than 30 PGR students. Our Northumbria Space Technology Laboratory within the North-East Space Skills and Technology centre (NESST) provides new opportunities to work with industry in the space sector.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a PhD in applied mathematics/statistics and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in stochastic differential equations.
