Main duties of the job

Orthopaedic Trauma surgery in Cambridge has seen a dramatic change in the last few years, with the development of Cambridge as the Level I trauma centre for East Anglia. A full range of Orthopaedic Trauma is covered, including pelvic and acetabular trauma, complex periarticular fractures, as well as non union, deformity and bone infection surgery.

We accept tertiary referrals for all types of complex fractures, including open fractures, and have a good relationship with the plastic surgical directorate.

There will be no routine on call duties. At least 2 full days will be in the Orthopaedic Trauma Theatre, and 1 in the clinic. One or more sessions of lower limb arthroplasty will also be part of the timetable. Friday mornings are devoted to the Orthopaedic Trauma Unit 'Grand round' where all the week's complex cases are discussed, as well as being part of an ongoing trauma teaching programme. The fellow will be expected to play an active role in this teaching, as well as junior teaching sessions. Currently this post is NOT recognised for training, as approval has not yet been agreed by the JCCST.

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of application is required.

Working for your organisation

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department is actively involved in a number of national Orthopaedic Trauma trials and both consultants have been chief investigators for NIHR funded trials, namely KFORT and ACEfit (randomized trials looking at different treatments for distal femur fractures / acetabular fractures).

The Orthopaedic Trauma Unit is staffed by 7 enthusiastic fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons, providing daily cover for the complex Orthopaedic Trauma Theatre. The fellow will be mainly working with Mr Hull, Mr Carrothers, Mr Rawal and Mr Chou all of whom have an interest in pelvic and acetabular surgery and complex trauma surgery. Mr Carrothers and Mr Chou also have a specific interest in fix and replace for acetabular trauma, alongside a complex hip revision practice. Around 120 pelvic and acetabular fractures are treated operatively each year.

Please refer to the Job description and Person specification on CUH Vacancies website for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Peter Hull or and visit the department.
