This role will lead a large team that make up the Safety team covering all specialisms across the University, communicating and enacting safety policies to all stakeholder groups whilst effectively managing day to day Health and Safety operations.

This role will play a critical role in upholding the University of Cambridge's commitment to providing a safe environment that supports academic excellence, personal development, and community engagement.

Responsibilities of the Deputy Director of Health and Safety role will include:

  • Leading the Safety Office in ensuring that the service provided by the Safety team is correctly positioned to support core activities of teaching and research.
  • Corporate Oversight of the Safety Office and it's three chief functions of strategic management, policy development, and communication.
  • Play a vital role in building and maintaining professional networks within the University and between the University and external bodies.
  • Play an important part in strategic planning, development, and governance of Health and Safety, across the University, ensuring academic activities are professionally supported.
  • Developing Safety training to be rolled out across the University.

The successful Deputy Director of Health and Safety candidate will have:

  • Experience in leading a health and safety function and team, ideally within an educational or related organisation
  • Diploma or equivalent level Health and Safety qualification
  • A combination of operational and strategic experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience of working with varied and demanding stakeholders, ideally within the research or academic sectors, and ability to adapt your style to meet different needs
  • Confidence in dealing with staff at all levels
