City Services at Southampton City Council are seeking a Safety, Health, and Compliance Manager.

About the role

You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our dedicated staff and assist the management team to monitor and manage in compliance with all relevant regulations, policies and procedures.

We are seeking a dynamic individual who is passionate about fostering a positive safety culture and ensuring the implementation of robust safety measures across our environmental services, including waste collection, fleet workshops, parks, street cleansing, tree officers and tree surgeons, landscaping, and pest control to name a few. This is a hands-on role and 40% of your time will be visiting different teams at different depots.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Keep staff safe through the development and implementation of comprehensive safety protocols and procedures.
  • Cultivate a positive safety culture, encouraging staff to prioritise safety and look out for one another.
  • Ensure all staff have access to and understand risk assessments and method statements to perform their duties safely.
  • Develop and execute a 5-year safety strategy in alignment with organisational, legislative goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of the safety strategy, monitoring progress and adjusting as necessary to achieve optimal results.
  • Minimise accidents and incidents by proactively identifying and addressing hazards and risks.
  • Encourage and facilitate the reporting of near misses and hazards to continually improve safety practices.
  • Manage 2 safety, health and compliance officers

    About you

    Qualifications and Skills:
    • Proven experience in safety management, ideally within a municipal or environmental services setting.
    • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and best practices in the relevant field of operation
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
    • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a track record of successfully implementing safety initiatives and driving results.
    • Professional certifications such as NEBOSH or IOSH are essential.
    • Full UK driving license and right to work in the UK essential
