Job Introduction

We're dedicated to creating an environment where everyone can thrive, feel like they belong and perform the best work of their careers.

We recognise the critical importance of mental health and wellbeing in achieving our mission and that's where you come in

We are seeking a visionary, passionate leader in the field of mental health to join us and lead our wellbeing strategy.

This role will focus on developing and implementing effective strategies in wellbeing with a particular focus on mental health.

Your solutions, advice and leadership will support a diverse, global workforce who deliver world class creativity and journalism for our audiences.

If you are a leading light in mental health with a proven track record of creating impactful wellbeing programmes in a leadership role, we want to hear from you.

Main Responsibilities

The BBC is seeking a strategic and visionary mental health expert to join us as the Head of Wellbeing. In this role, you will lead the development and implementation of comprehensive wellbeing initiatives across the organisation.

You will be responsible for integrating best practices to enhance employee wellbeing and fostering a supportive and healthy work environment.

As the Head of Wellbeing, you will collaborate with senior leadership, create policies, and drive programmes that promote mental and physical health, ultimately making the BBC a great place to work.

You will assess organisational wellbeing needs, design and execute effective wellbeing strategies, and continuously evaluate the impact of these initiatives to ensure alignment with the BBC's goals.

Join us in making a significant difference in the wellbeing of our talented team at the BBC.

If you have the expertise and passion for promoting mental, physical, and emotional health in a dynamic and influential organisation, we would love to hear from you.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Wellbeing Team in providing health-related activities for all employees in the UK and internationally. Assess the landscape of mental wellbeing across the organisation and determine the right solutions, engaging external experts when necessary for the prevention and treatment of work-related ill health.
  • Conduct psychological assessments, provide individual and group sessions to support employees in managing workplace mental health concerns to mitigate the risks of vicarious trauma in journalism and the media.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based interventions tailored to the unique needs of employees in the broadcast and media industry, line manage the team of Wellbeing Partners, and provide professional clinical supervision.
  • Collaborate with HR, management, and occupational health providers to promote a psychologically healthy work environment and support organisational wellbeing initiatives. Furthermore, you will offer consultation and guidance to production teams on managing psychological challenges related to content creation, provide global crisis intervention and support during high-stress events or emergencies, and design and deliver training programs on mental health, resilience, and stress management.
Are you the right candidate?

To succeed in this role, you must stay abreast of the latest research and best practices in clinical psychology and apply this knowledge to enhance support services within the BBC.

You will coordinate wider Health and Wellbeing provision, support organisational effectiveness by developing and implementing solutions aligned to the people strategy, and work closely with key stakeholders such as Chief Operating Officers and HR Directors.

  • Proven experience in leading high-impact, enterprise-wide wellbeing strategies
  • Highly effective departmental and team leadership experience
  • Strategic partnering relationships at the executive/senior level within organisations
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.
D. or Psy.
D.) in Clinical Psychology or Occupational Psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS)

  • Significant experience working as a Clinical or Occupational Psychologist, preferably within corporate, public service, or media environments, ideally globally and with experience in trauma assessments and treatment
  • Expertise in evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as CBT, DBT, or mindfulness-based interventions
  • Thought leader in the wellbeing arena
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish effective therapeutic relationships
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and across diverse departments
  • Analytical skills to contextualise complex issues and develop effective, practical plans to resolve problems
  • Effective interpersonal, management, and communication skills, including the ability to write and present clear and concise professional communications to audiences at all levels of the BBC
  • Capability to build a wellbeing brand that inspires trust and connects to our values
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, ethical standards, and professional boundaries in all interactions

Desirable Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the unique stressors and challenges faced by individuals in the broadcast and media industry
  • Full registration to professional bodies such as the Health and Care Professions Council
  • Experience in delivering wellbeing models within an HR or People strategy
About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants.

Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here .

Diversity matters at the BBC.

We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles.

The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.

We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
