This research project delves into the development of tools tailored to conceptualise 6th generation combat aircraft. It encompasses an exploration of pertinent feature modelling, leading towards an in-depth examination of the design space within this category of aerial vehicles.
An existing design methodology is currently under refinement to aid proficient aircraft designers in crafting conceptual aircraft designs. While historically focused on a diverse array of civil applications, recent endeavours have sought to extend this approach to encompass military aircraft. This study seeks to advance the methodology specifically for military applications.
The existing tool comprises various interacting modules operating at distinct levels of fidelity, each dedicated to specific design aspects such as aerodynamics, mass and balance, and performance. Through manipulation of inputs and control parameters, a wide spectrum of aircraft configurations and outcomes can be achieved. This methodological framework is poised to facilitate the development of a tailored conceptual design tool for future combat aircraft, offering extensive parametrisation of design features and flexibility. This flexibility not only supports cost-effective trade studies but also validation endeavours. Additionally, its modular nature allows for the swift investigation of additional features and their impact on overall design and performance.
The focal point of this project lies in the domain of 6th generation combat aircraft, with a particular emphasis on exploring features like directed energy weapon systems and low observable technologies. It will also consider both crewed and de-crewed concepts, reflecting the evolving landscape of aerial combat strategies.
Given the substantial interest surrounding this class of vehicles, assuming Export License clearance, promising publications are anticipated to emerge from this research endeavour.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in Aeronautical Engineering or aerospace or a related discipline. This project would suit those with a strong interest in aviation. Experience of computer programming (preferably in Java) would be an advantage. A logical, creative mind would be appropriate.
