Newport, Newport, United Kingdom Newport City Council Full time

Newport is a vibrant, forward-thinking city steeped in rich industrial heritage that recently has proved it can re-establish and adapt itself as a centre of modern industry and commerce.

Newport City Council's Environment and Public Protection service area brings together various services such as waste and cleansing, grounds, community protection, parks and recreation, cemetery and crematorium, climate change, biodiversity and regulatory services.

In the Collections discipline, we focus on providing a first class refuse collection service. This is an exciting time to join the Waste and Cleansing Services team - we moved to a three weekly refuse collection service in 2023 to support attainment of 70% recycling and in April 2024 revised our trade waste services to comply with the new Separation Regulations.

Newport City Council is looking to recruit a Collections Supervisor on a permanent basis (37 hours per week Monday-Sunday).

As the Collections Supervisor, duties and responsibilities will include a variety of tasks within the service. Broadly this comprises supervising daily residual domestic and trade collections, green waste collections, special / bulky collections, and seasonal initiatives.

You will oversee teams of up to 50 staff, organise manning and fleet schedules to ensure effective service delivery. You will be responsible for reactive fleet and plant repairs for a range of vehicles and equipment, responding to customer queries and complaints via email or telephone.

You will be responsible for the health and safety of the team, this will include writing and reviewing risk assessments, monitoring health screenings, ordering PPE etc.

Report directly to the Collections Team Manager you will work closely with other areas within Waste and Cleansing and other NCC disciplines such as highways and in collaborations with internal and external stakeholders across the City.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and confident person, candidates with previous or current knowledge and experience in a similar position who take pride in their work.

You should have experience of supervising a team and carrying out similar tasks as described.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ideally an extensive knowledge of Newport's residential and rural streets – although this can be learned. Candidates will demonstrate experience of dealing with customer enquiries, and will appreciate the importance of customer care.

You will have a level of IT skills that will enable you to answer emails and use applications within the basic office package such as Word and Excel, along with other NCC applications.

Our vision is to provide the most efficient and effective services in Wales and to enable this you will need to embrace change, technology, and performance management.
