Sheffield, Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

This post provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in an academic career to develop their profile within a six-year development pathway. You will join one of our world-class research groups and be provided with a generous time allocation to undertake a part-time PhD as a staff candidate. At the same time, you will develop your teaching portfolio by supporting the teaching of computer science in the school. Specifically, you will support students in laboratory classes, lead tutorials and small group teaching activities, supervise dissertation projects, and carry out marking and assessment activities. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to curriculum development.

The University of Sheffield is a great place to do computer science research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 99% of our research was rated in the highest two categories (4* and 3*), meaning that it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent. Half of our research outputs were judged to be world-leading. We were rated as 8th in the UK (out of 90 institutions) for the quality of our research environment, and 70% of our impact was judged to be outstanding.

You will be guided and supported in both your research and teaching skills development by experienced academic staff. You will benefit from the vibrant research environment of your research group and will contribute to enhancing our reputation for high quality and innovative teaching. You will take an active role in delivering an excellent student experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. 60% of your time will be dedicated to research, with the remaining 40% allocated to teaching.

You will hold a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (at least an upper second class degree in computer science or a related subject) and will have some previous teaching experience (for example through teaching support, laboratory demonstrating etc).

Since it is expected that you will complete a part-time PhD, this post is not suited to candidates who already hold a PhD in Computer Science. No cost is incurred by you for studying the PhD, since staff candidates are exempt from paying tuition fees.

We're one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University's Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience. The School of Computer Science holds a Silver Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.
