What it's like to work here

You'll join a small, lively and enthusiastic team that are passionate about Birmingham's complex tapestry of stories. Our kayak and SUP tours are engaging and interactive and mainly focus on the experience of kayaking and paddleboarding, with a sprinkle of history along the way.

Our unique site in the centre of the city backs onto Birmingham's canals, providing an easy transition from the storeroom to the water. All guests will check in with our Visitor Centre team and complete consent forms in advance of their experience. You'll then conduct safety briefings and paddle instructions before taking the group out onto their tour. For more information on the tours and experiences, please visit

What you'll be doing

Based at the Roundhouse, you'll welcome visitors of all ages and abilities, and make them feel safe and comfortable to enjoy their activity. You'll conduct safety briefings and teach paddle basics to all guests before assisting them onto the water for their experience. Your tour will be engaging, informative and professional, and you'll convey the history of Birmingham's canals and the local area. You'll confidently navigate Birmingham's waterways, being respectful of other users such as narrowboats, working boats and wildlife. We have a small team of Paddlesport Guides (staff, freelance and volunteers) and there will be opportunities to work together as well as working independently. When not with guests, you'll ensure all safety and equipment checks have been completed.

Most kayak experiences take place Friday-Sunday, with occasional Wednesday's and Thursday's. We are happy to discuss working days/hours and job shares.

All paddle equipment will be provided, as will the historical content for you to learn. We will provide training to ensure you feel confident in delivering the tours and experiences.

You'll be required to hold a minimum of a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor qualification.
