Mid-Weight Developer

Derby, United Kingdom Burnthebook Full time

This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-weight developer to join our growing development team. Please note that this is a fully remote role. It is therefore key that the successful candidate is a dynamic self-starter who can manage their own time and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

About Us

Burnthebook is a digital agency which specialises in delivering high quality, business-first solutions that put customer experience first. For over 25 years we have partnered with industry leading clients in a variety of sectors such as gaming, GIS, climate change and culture & tourism, delivering commercial and transformational solutions with significant impact.

All Burnthebook team members will benefit from the flexibility of our fully remote working environment. We will also supply you with a Macbook to complete your work and provide full support in ensuring you have a comfortable and suitable work-from-home setup.

About the Role

As an experienced mid-weight developer, you will be versatile and comfortable working on both front-end and back-end tasks, with a strong focus on front-end development. You should be adept at building high-quality, mobile-first responsive websites and digital experiences using modern technologies. A significant portion of the role will involve working with content management systems like Craft CMS and Drupal, so familiarity with these platforms is essential.

As this role is fully remote, you will be expected to be a self-starter who will take ownership of projects, manage your workload effectively, and collaborate closely with designers, project managers, and other developers. You should have a keen eye for detail and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality work. Exceptional communication skills are a must, as you will often collaborate with the wider team to gather requirements and provide technical insights.

This role offers the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects, making a real impact while enhancing your skillset and growing within a collaborative and creative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain responsive websites using Craft CMS, Drupal, and other web technologies.
  • Develop new user-facing features and enhance existing functionality.
  • Collaborate closely with designers to implement pixel-perfect front-end interfaces.
  • Integrate front-end solutions with back-end systems and APIs.
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues to ensure optimal performance.
  • Participate in project planning, scoping, and estimation discussions.
  • Maintain high coding standards and follow best practices for clean and scalable code.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to other developers.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and clients, providing technical support and guidance where needed.

Who You Are

As an ideal candidate for this role, you should be a self-starter who has excellent time management and prioritisation skills. Communication skills, both written and verbal, are strong, and you should enjoy solving problems with an eye for detail, whilst keeping the end user in mind. You will be proficient in front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as modern libraries. While you may not work with them every day, you have had some exposure to modern front-end frameworks like Vue and Nuxt. A degree or other high-level qualifications in any of the above skills would be preferable.

You must have strong experience with Craft CMS, creating websites, e-commerce platforms, and headless applications. You’re aware of Drupal as a platform and are open to learning more about it, knowing that our primary focus is Craft CMS, but we do manage a few Drupal sites. In addition, you’re competent in back-end development and feel comfortable working with PHP, MySQL, and related frameworks.

You’re familiar with Git and not afraid to dive into the command line when needed. You know how to bring a design from mock-up or wireframe to completion, using tools such as Figma, ensuring responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.

You’re well-versed in RESTful and Graph APIs and have previously built third-party integrations. With your finger on the pulse of web development, you will be someone who stays up to date with evolving technologies and are passionate about both learning more and sharing your knowledge with the team.

How to Apply

To apply for this role, please supply an up-to-date CV and a short cover letter/note outlining why your experience would be relevant to our goals for this role.

Successful candidates will be contacted by our team to discuss the role and your experience in more detail before invitation to a formal interview.

Please note: Strictly no recruitment agencies. Candidates must be a UK resident.
