Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities:


The Group Health and Safety Manager will advise Directors and Managers on all safety, health, and welfare matters to ensure the company complies with its statutory obligations. This senior management role involves devising and implementing new Safety cultures, management systems, strategies and strengthening communication channels while managing with a strategic approach, keeping the future development of both the Health and Safety Department and the business in mind. Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand and apply the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974 and other relevant legislation.
  • Stay updated with changes in legislation and inform the Director of relevant updates.
  • Attend external courses/seminars for accurate interpretation and implementation of legislation.
  • Prepare and write method statements, risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and site visit reports.
  • Ensure all necessary assessments are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals, maintaining records.
  • Complete yearly CHAS applications and maintain certification.
  • Conduct fortnightly health and safety inspections at sites, advising on best practices and preparing reports.
  • Contact the Director immediately for any situations requiring immediate rectification or stopping operations.
  • Investigate accidents and near-miss incidents, recording findings and recommending improvements.
  • Arrange health surveillance as instructed.
  • Highlight areas requiring training/certification to meet legislative standards.
  • Review the training matrix against business needs and ensure it is current.
  • Recommend control measures and advise on PPE standards.
  • Prepare and present H&S Management Reports to the Director.
  • Encourage and develop better awareness and understanding of H&S policies through education and communication.


Experience:

  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety within the UK construction industry.
  • Experience delivering projects to strict criteria and timescales.


Skills:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong negotiating and team-working skills with the ability to motivate and lead on-site personnel.
  • Demonstrable customer relationship and networking skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to write clear and precise reports and communicate complex information simply.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


Qualifications:

  • Degree level education or equivalent with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate is required.
  • Membership of IOSH and the NEBOSH Diploma is essential.
  • A valid full clean UK driving licence is required for site travel.
