About the NIA: The Nuclear Industry Association is the trade association and representative body for the civil nuclear industry in the UK. We represent over 300 companies operating across all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, including the current and prospective operators of nuclear power stations, international designers, and vendors of nuclear power stations, and those engaged in decommissioning, waste management and nuclear liabilities management, fuel fabrication and nuclear fusion. Members also include nuclear equipment suppliers, engineering and construction firms, nuclear research organisations, and legal, financial and consultancy companies.


Our role is to represent the UK civil nuclear industry to government, Parliament, stakeholders, and the media, to advocate for nuclear power as an essential part of the country’s energy mix, to assist our member companies in maximising industrial opportunities in the UK and internationally and arranging industry events and conferences.

Purpose of the Role: The Policy Analyst role is a critical role at the NIA, as one of the organisation’s essential objectives is build the evidence for major investment in nuclear power. You will report to the Head of Policy and will be responsible for supporting NIA’s policy programme.


This role requires a proactive, energetic, and capable individual with experience and strong interest in policy development, and an individual who can thrive within a dynamic and ambitious team. A passion for ensuring our energy security and achieving net zero is essential.


Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring developments in energy policy and the civil nuclear industry.
  • Analysing data on UK grid mix, national and regional carbon intensity, balancing costs, electricity prices, nuclear emissions savings, and other topics to provide evidence to strengthen the case for nuclear.
  • Drafting responses to government consultations and select committee inquiries, including collating input from members on a wide range of issues.
  • Drafting briefings on topical policy areas for the industry.
  • Supporting the Senior Policy Analyst and Head of Policy in developing NIA policy asks of Government.
  • Developing relationships with policy experts across the wider energy industry to stay up to date on issues affecting wider energy sector and highlight nuclear issues.
  • Engage in regular one-to-one meetings with member companies to exchange updates.
  • Supporting NIA-led working groups.
  • Representing the NIA at industry working groups and external events. Some requirements to travel for events and advocacy activity in and out of hours around the UK.


What we are looking for:

Essential:

  • Interest in energy policy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to tailor material to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to operate proactively to support given priorities and objectives, rather than relying on day-to-day instructions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to establish strong working relationships within Westminster and the nuclear industry.

Desirable:

  • Prior experience working in a policy role.
  • Knowledge of the UK civil nuclear industry, especially from a lobbying and policy development perspective.
  • Experience working for a membership organisation.
