Lead of Navigation

London Area, United Kingdom Humanoid Full time

At Humanoid we strive to create the world's leading, commercially scalable, safe, and advanced humanoid robots that seamlessly integrate into daily life and amplify human capacity.

In a world where artificial intelligence opens up new horizons, our faith in its potential unveils a new outlook where, together, humans and machines build a new future filled with knowledge, inspiration, and incredible discoveries.

The development of a functional humanoid robot underpins an era of abundance and well-being where poverty will disappear, and people will be able to choose what they want to do. We believe that providing a universal basic income will eventually be a true evolution of our civilization.

As the demands on our built environment rise, labour shortages loom. With the world’s workforce increasingly moving away from undesirable tasks, the manufacturing, construction, and logistics industries critical to our daily lives are left exposed.

By deploying our general-purpose humanoid robots in environments deemed hazardous or monotonous, we envision a future where human well-being is safeguarded while closing the gaps in critical global labour needs.

We are seeking a Navigation Lead to head our Navigation team. This role involves leading the development of algorithms that enable our humanoid robots to navigate safely and efficiently through dynamic environments. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), path planning, and motion planning algorithms, and will be experienced in using ROS (Robot Operating System). This person will work closely with the Reasoning and Locomotion teams to ensure seamless integration of navigation modules into the broader robot architecture.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of path planning, visual/laser/radar SLAM, and localization algorithms for humanoid robots.

- Develop and refine algorithms for scene graph construction, semantic mapping, and path/motion planning.

- Integrate navigation algorithms with the robot’s perception and control systems, ensuring robust performance in real-world environments.

- Collaborate closely with the Reasoning and Locomotion teams to align navigation strategies with high-level decision-making and movement control.

- Evaluate and improve existing navigation solutions based on real-world deployment feedback and data.

- Ensure the seamless operation of navigation components within the ROS framework.

- Mentor and guide team members, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.

Expertise

- Advanced degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.

- Extensive experience in SLAM, motion planning, and path planning for robotic systems.

- Proficiency in programming languages such as C++ or Python.

- Strong experience with ROS and its application in real-world robotics projects.

- Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage complex projects.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively across interdisciplinary teams.

- Familiarity with LLMs and VLMs for semantic mapping and graph-based navigation techniques

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with humanoid robots or other mobile robots in dynamic environments.

- A strong publication record in the fields of SLAM, path planning, or robotics navigation.

- Passion for robotics and a drive to push the boundaries of what is possible.

- Experience with real-time path planning refinement and shared memory management for navigation

Benefits

- High competitive salary.

- 23 calendar days of vacation per year.

- Flexible working hours.

- Opportunity to work on the latest technologies in AI/ML, Robotics and others.

- Startup model, offering a dynamic and innovative work environment.
