About the role:

The Collections Manager – Framed Works will lead and coordinate elements of the work of Assistant Collection Managers within the Collections Directorate in delivering Museum projects and daily care of the collections, with a particular focus on framed works.

The post holder will work with colleagues across the Museum, contributing to the planning and supervision of activities connected with the care of, and access to, the collection by BM staff and a range of external audiences.

This role will primarily focus on the preparation of framed works for display and loans including framing, making frames, installation and packing, and may also include the maintenance of workshops, stores and permanent displays, object handling, movement, and documentation, operation of study rooms, and couriering.

The post holder may also contribute to the development of standard procedures and a formalised Training Programme to be applied across the Museum, reflecting recognised best practice in the sector.

The post holder will directly manage up to four Assistant Collection Managers depending on the museum’s exhibition and loan programme.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To work with the Senior Collections Managers to plan delivery of relevant Museum activities with a particular focus on resource allocation, leading on certain activities as required.
  • To facilitate and promote the cohesive and harmonious operation of all collections management teams across the Museum, supporting the work of the Senior Collections Managers.
  • To contribute to the development of processes that support best practice standards in object handling, care, display, documentation and loans, condition reporting, ensuring the implementation and maintenance of those standards across the Collections Directorate.
  • To manage processes connected with the security, audit and essential documentation of the collection, and to manage and coordinate the condition reporting (including photography) of objects.

About you:

  • Good general education including GCSEs or equivalent
  • Demonstrable interest in aspects of the British Museum’s collections
  • Manual dexterity
  • Practical experience of object/ art handling and installation in a museum or similar environment
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team, manage budgets, timetables and deliver a varied programme of work
