Join us and discover better as you deliver world-class science for the future.nAs an Assistant Scientist you’ll assist with the extraction and preliminary identification of plant-parasitic nematodes from plant and soil samples, received from the APHA Plant Health and Seed Inspectorate (PHSI) and via the Fera Plant Clinic.

37.5 Monday – Friday (flexi between 7am & 7pm)nStart date:

ASAP depending on recruitment and onboarding timelines.

What you’ll be doing:nProcess a large number of plant and soil samples within deadline, following standard operating procedures.nPreliminarily identification and quantification of plant-parasitic nematodes, both free-living and cyst using low power dissection microscopy.nWork to ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 standards and to a quarantine code of conduct.nReport potato cyst nematode (PCN) analysis results to the PHSI by the most appropriate means i.e. electronic system, email or telephone.nProvide support for other diagnostic work or project work within the Nematology team and wider Plant Protection Programme as required.nMaintain nematode cultures for molecular standards and R&D projects.

What we’re looking for:nIdeally, you’ll have a science related qualification and exposure to or an understanding of quality standards.nRelevant experience of working with plant pests or pathogens is desirable.nAn excellent communicator and team playernGreat attention to detailnThe post holder will be expected to provide good customer service and work in an organised and efficient manner. Taking direction from the Delivery Manager, they will be able to prioritise their work in a busy environment to meet deadlines.nWe are looking for someone who can perform microscopy for long periods of time and can maintain quality whilst performing repetitive tasks.nA keenness to develop knowledge of nematological biology and taxonomy is highly desired.
