The Chemical Safety department is a diverse scientific service department, which conducts highly technical assessments. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality, regulatory projects which adhere to and comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). We engage within scientific research and development, which ensures we remain at the forefront of scientific and regulatory development within chemistry, environmental fate, metabolism, and ecotoxicology.
**Role**: Assistant Scientist
**Salary**: From £23,920
**Location**: BioTech Campus YO411LZ
**Working pattern**: 37.5 Monday - Friday (flexi between 7am & 7pm)
**Start date**: ASAP depending on recruitment and onboarding timelines.
**What you’ll be doing**:
- Performing daily equipment checks, instrument maintenance and general laboratory housekeeping.
- Conduct work to Good Laboratory Practice quality system in compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Perform laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment.
- Assist others in all aspects of laboratory and field studies in compliance with the relevant study plans / methods.
- Undertake field and semi-field-based procedures.
- Conduct sample extraction and clean-up of samples using a variety of wet chemistry techniques on both radio labelled and non-radiolabelled compounds.
- Operate analytical instrumentation such as HPLC.
- Maintain written and computer records.
- Data entry and calculation and reporting of results.
**What we’re looking for**:
- Preferably you’ll have a chemistry related qualification or equivalent experience.
- Experience in a laboratory setting and understanding of techniques.
- Experience of operating within a quality system (e.g. GLP, UKAS, ISO etc) would be highly beneficial.
- Experience of environmental fate and/or analytical chemistry projects would be highly desirable.
- Ability to keep clear and accurate written records of experimental work to a high standard.
- Ability to work within a team as well as independently.
- Practical IT skills in software packages such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experienced in organising, prioritising and completing work to required standards and to tight deadlines.
