The Insect Colony Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day running of insect colony breeding and rearing activities. They will also contribute to the delivery of experimental work.

**Role**: Assistant Scientist

**Salary**: From £23,920

**Location**: BioTech Campus YO411LZ

**Working pattern**: 37.5 Monday - Friday (flexi between 7am & 7pm)

**Start date**: ASAP depending on recruitment and onboarding timelines.

**What you’ll be doing**:

- Be responsible for the day to day running of insect colony breeding and rearing activities.
- Contribute to the delivery of experimental work.
- Communicate with the delivery and project manager to identify their requirements and agree prioritisation and planning work in relation to delivery targets.
- Perform daily equipment checks.
- Cleaning breeding and rearing equipment and general laboratory housekeeping.
- Ensure that the laboratories are maintained to Fera’s health and safety and operational polices.
- Ensure best practice in the laboratory, following Standard Operating Procedures and conducting work to the quality systems in place.

**What we’re looking for**:

- Ideally, you’ll have GCSE’s (including English and Maths or Science) or equivalent experience.
- Willingness to work with insects and organic waste substrates.
- An efficient person who can deliver at pace with a high attention to detail.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to keep clear and accurate written records of work.
- Good team working skills but with the ability to work without supervision as required.
- Practical IT skills in software packages including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Able to organise, prioritise and complete tasks to the required standards.
- Experience of working with insects is desirable.
