Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Conventional Turner to join our precision Toolroom. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting and operating manual lathes to machine large diameter parts to close tolerances. This role involves working on one-off to small batch parts, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
* Set Up and Operation:
Set up and operate manual lathes, including using 3 and 4 jaw chucks.
Adjust machine settings to ensure proper speed, feed, and depth of cut.
Perform thread cutting and precision turning operations.
* Machining:
Machine large components from engineering drawings, ensuring that all parts meet specified dimensions and tolerances.
Produce high-quality one-off and small batch parts.
Work with large diameter parts, maintaining close tolerances throughout the machining process.
* Measurement and Quality Control:
Utilise a variety of precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, verniers, bore gauges) to inspect and verify dimensions of machined parts.
Ensure that all work complies with internal quality standards and customer specifications.
* Maintenance and Safety:
Perform routine maintenance on lathes and associated tooling to ensure optimal performance.
Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures within the toolroom environment.
* Documentation and Communication:
Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications.
Complete relevant documentation, such as job sheets and quality control records.
Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to ensure smooth workflow and timely delivery of parts.
Qualifications and Skills:
* Experience:
Proven experience as a Conventional Turner in a precision toolroom environment.
Proficiency in setting and operating manual lathes.
Extensive experience with 3 and 4 jaw chucks, thread cutting, and working to close tolerances.
* Technical Skills:
Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Skilled in the use of precision measuring equipment.
Understanding of machining principles, tool geometry, and material properties.
* Personal Attributes:
High attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machining issues.
Additional Information:
Working Hours: 39 hrs plus overtime
Salary: £16 to £18ph
