Policy Adviser, In-year Spending

General Expenditure Policy (GEP) sits at the heart of the Public Spending Group, responsible for reporting to the Chancellor and Chief Secretary on in year spending control, covering around £1,000bn of public expenditure.
About the rolenWe are looking for a Policy Adviser to join the In-year Unit, a small, friendly and supportive team. We work collaboratively with spending teams to monitor and forecast in-year departmental spending; supervise Mains and Supplementary Estimates (the process through which we set; adjust and get Parliamentary approval for departments’ annual budgets); advise on how to apply the main spending frameworks for government; and handle HMT’S Reserve (a large fund held for unforeseen circumstances.)
Key accountabilities include:nSupport the delivery of Main and Supplementary Estimates - the process of allocating c.£900bn of public spending to departments, which happens twice a year.nSupport with the forecasting of spend against fiscal rules and budgets, tracking and reporting risks and pressures as well as potential underspends.nBuild and maintain positive relationships with collaborators, including account management responsibilities for a spending team.nAdvise on and improve the public spending framework.
