STANDARDS COMMITTEE - APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT MEMBER


Pembrokeshire County Council is seeking to appoint an Independent Member to its Standards Committee in accordance with the rules laid down by Local Government Act 2000 and the Standards Committees (Wales) Regulations 2001.

Standards Committees have been established to assist with the promotion and maintenance of high standards of conduct by elected and co-opted members of all authorities

"Independent Members" are individuals who will serve on the Standards Committee.

You may NOT become an "Independent Member" if:

  • You are, or have been within the last twelve months, a member, officer, or the spouse/civil partner of a member or officer of any county, county borough, town or community council, fire and rescue authority or national park authority.
  • You were at any time a member or officer of Pembrokeshire County Council.

The successful applicant(s) will be expected to demonstrate
- a commitment to upholding ethical standards in public life
- objectivity, discretion, personal integrity and adherence to the Nolan principles
- good listening, communication, team-working and chairing skills
- an ability to analyse factual and evidential material, to weigh up the evidence and to form sound, objective judgements
- flexibility to attend meetings at short notice
- knowledge of and adherence to the Code of Conduct for Members


The exact amount of time required to fulfil this role is difficult to predict; however, the Standards Committee have four scheduled meetings a year, plus some other meetings as and when necessary.

The appointment shall be for between four and six years in the first instance. The Appointment Panel will interview and make recommendations to the Council based on the criteria prescribed.

Please note that interviews will be held on the late January / early February 2024.
