An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated diabetes specialist podiatrist to join the well-established team at LUHFT.


Based on the Aintree site, you will work closely with members of the multi-disciplinary team in the management of highly complex diabetic and vascular foot complications and be involved in our shared goal of providing excellence in diabetes foot care to this group of patients.


Supporting NICE guidelines, you will work at an advanced level alongside our MDT Consultant colleagues & collaboratively with local health partners.

Currently we hold three MDT Diabetic Foot Clinics weekly, together with MDT ward rounds and clinical meetings. Part of your role will involve further developing the in-patient podiatry service, particularly to our diabetes wards.


We require people who are highly specialised with significant knowledge, clinical skills and experience at a senior level in the management of acute and chronic diabetic foot problems and a good working knowledge in the field of health education.


You will need to demonstrate relevant post graduate knowledge of the diabetic foot at MSc or equivalent level, together with at least 3 years' experience in the management of the high-risk patient.


To work as part of the multidisciplinary diabetes foot team providing clinical specialist treatment and advice to a clinically high-risk case load.


To provide the necessary specialised knowledge and skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with diabetic problems of the lower limb and foot.


To provide advice, support and training to colleagues in podiatry, the wider Trust MDT, our primary care partners and students in relation to foot related complications.


To assess and refer for clearly planned podiatric care packages for patients with a variety of care needs, with the aim of maintaining maximum independence and mobility, co-ordinating a seamless model of foot care from the multi-disciplinary diabetes team to community health services.


To liaise closely with relevant professionals for the arrangement of immediate treatment/intervention and for the referral of patients to other members of the wider MDT.


Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Clinical Responsibilities
To act as a clinical diabetes foot specialist within the multidisciplinary team.


To be responsible for the day-to-day clinical provision of acute podiatry and wound clinics in the multidisciplinary diabetes centre and acute podiatry clinics.


To have highly developed physical skills, precision hand/eye co-ordination which involves highly skilled debridement techniques of acute/chronic, neuropathic and ischaemic wounds.

To provide podiatry treatment in a variety of clinical settings:

  • Outpatient clinics with MDT in Diabetes directorate
  • Outpatient clinics with MDT in Rehabilitation directorate
  • Acute hospital wards


Some of which may be in isolation and requiring working in a restricted position for a substantial proportion of the working time.

To have the capability to move and handle patients who may be immobile, wheelchair or bed bound, often working in difficult conditions


To assess new and existing patients and develop individual treatment plans to meet their podiatric need, liaising with the patient and other health care professionals as appropriate, utilising highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and practical experience.

Managerial/Leadership
To assist with the supervision of students and junior staff when required to do so.

To actively participate in the professional development programme of the Podiatry Department

To inspire others and encourage them to seek advice and solutions to problems

To challenge others to take an active part in developing knowledge, ideas and work practice

To promote the service and disseminate Good Practice both internal and external to the Trust.
