Queer East is seeking five regional coordinators to support the delivery of their touring events, and to contribute to local outreach activities.

Queer East is an arts and cultural organisation that showcases boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ cinema, performances, and moving image work from East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora communities. The organisation runs an annual Queer East Festival in London, a nationwide touring project involving over 10 cities, and year-round events in venues across the UK and Europe. Queer East is currently funded by the British Film Institute (BFI), Arts Council England, and Westminster City Council.

After the record-breaking fifth London edition of Queer East Festival, we are gearing up for our nationwide tour, On the Road. To further develop our relationships with queer, arts and cultural communities in each touring location, we are seeking five regional coordinators to support the delivery of our touring events, and to contribute to local outreach activities.

Overview

Queer East: On the Road 2024 is currently scheduled to take place in 15 cities across the country, running from August to December. For this advertised role of Touring Project Coordinator, we are looking for candidates who are based in the following cities:

  • Edinburgh or Glasgow
  • Leeds or Sheffield
  • Bristol or Cardiff
  • Manchester or Liverpool
  • Nottingham or Birmingham or Leicester

Contract: Freelance
Salary: £20 per hour
Working Hours: You are expected to work 7 to 10 hours per week, with a potential increase during the weeks when Queer East events take place. This role requires a mixture of remote and on-site working. You must attend the screening events for which you are responsible.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the delivery of regional screenings, to include arranging marketing materials, overseeing logistics, organising the guest list, and the on-site management of events.
  • Undertake targeted outreach with local communities, LGBTQ+ groups, and cultural organisations, to support audience engagement and development.
  • Liaise and work with the venue partners to ensure that events run efficiently and on time.
  • Recommend potential external guests, speakers, and venues for events.
  • Host screenings and additional activities such as Q&As and panel discussions, on behalf of Queer East.
  • Be the first point of contact for venue colleagues, filmmakers, volunteers, and external guests during the events.
  • Coordinate event documentation and photography if required.
  • Ensure audience surveying takes place after every event, and input the feedback data.
  • Provide a brief post-event report on the impact of the activities, and feedback on related audience engagement work.
Experience and skills
  • An interest in, and understanding of, queer cinema and East & Southeast Asian cinema.
  • Knowledge of, and networks with, local LGBTQ+ and Asian communities, organisations, and groups.
  • Experience working in an event management or production role.
  • Organisational skills, including advance planning and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • A proactive attitude, and the ability to take initiative when solving problems.
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, diversity and inclusion.
  • Capacity to be flexible with commitments, and to work during evenings and weekends.
  • Previous experience working for a film festival or a cinema.
  • Previous experience in community outreach activities, in a non-profit organisation or social enterprise.
  • Understanding of the technical requirements for films screening in festivals, such as DCP formats, file types and codecs, and aspect ratios.
