As a Maternity Support Worker, your key duties will include:

  • Supporting new parents and their families on adapting to parenthood
  • Providing support and help for breastfeeding
  • Promoting safe care of newborns
  • Assisting with personal hygiene
  • Being a strong team player, with the ability to work autonomously.
If you are working within our community teams, you will also need to work independently to conduct home visits.


All applicants for this role will be required to successfully pass all parts of the selection process (literacy & numeracy testing and interview).


During the interview, our Learning and Development team will meet you to discuss your experience and qualifications and confirm your educational pathway if successful at interview.

Our maternity services provide a full range of maternity care.

Our dedicated midwives, doctors, maternity care support workers (MCSW's) and support staff are committed to providing personalised care to the highest standards.


The service at North Bristol Trust is based at Southmead Hospital and provides a full range of obstetric services for those who live in the catchment of North Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

The maternity department is one of the largest in the country, was awarded 'Good' by the CQC has more than 5200 births each year offering women the choice of 4 places of birth.

These include a Consultant led Obstetric Unit with 2 HDU rooms and 9 birthing rooms and a pool room.

There is an extensive Maternal Medicine service, including Perinatal Mental Health and Complex Care team and a Fetal Medicine service.

The antenatal ward hosts a Triage, day assessment area and inpatient ward.

The postnatal ward prides itself on giving the best quality postnatal care, caring for each other and the new mothers, families and babies.

There is an Alongside Midwifery Unit, a Freestanding Midwifery Unit at Cossham Hospital, and Home Birth Team. There are highly skilled midwifery teams who value the autonomy and varied responsibilities of these areas.

  • Ability to perform area specific clinical competencies in line with core standards under the direction of a Registered Practitioner
  • Assist with women's assessment within level of competence reporting immediately any changes in physical and mental condition to the Registered Practitioner.

Clinical:

  • Help to promote and maintain a clean and safe environment within the clinical area.
  • Contribute to accurate written and computerised documentation relevant to client care ensuring confidentiality of client information at all times e.g. care plans, recording of height and weight, infant feeding charts, within the hand held records. Contribute to the transfer of women and their babies to the home setting
  • Be aware of the importance of good health and the health education needs of clients, which are identified within individual, care plans.
  • Ensure courtesy and respect at all times.
  • Caring for mothers and babies with safeguarding (child protection) issues
  • Participating in demonstrating basic nursing skills to junior staff and with appropriate training assess competence of band 2 MCAs
  • Prepare and undertake agreed clinical activities after training and competence has been achieved such as:
  • Obtaining basic specimens as required e.g. urinalysis
  • Blood sugar analysis
  • Obtaining and processing samples for sexually transmitted infections
  • Undertaking phlebotomy as directed by the midwife
  • Taking part in health promotion during parent education sessions, in baby care, breast-feeding, and maternity benefit advice.
  • Neonatal routine assessments. Obtaining PKUs and taking SBRs if instructed by the midwife
